Description Makiko had her Erikae, or debut as a Geiko. She wore her most formal attire and presented herself to okiya (geisha house), ochaya (tea house), and local shops to thank everyone for their support.

Roji means a teahouse garden or a path through a garden. This ochaya has the most beautiful garden in all of Gion Kobu.

This is so beautiful! I'm so glad that you have all of these pictures, since I'm currently researching geiko and maiko for a story I have in the works. The information you put in the descriptions is really helpful, since a lot of really good photographers only put "..." underneath their photos. I just thought I'd thank you for all of the help your pictures are giving me.

Thank you so much, I'm glad I could be of help. I know what you mean about some artists' comments sections. It's such a tease when a photograph looks like it has a really interesting story, but the artist didn't put anything in the comments section. I tend to put too much information in mine, but I like to prepare for most of the viewers' questions.

What sort of story are you working on? If you have any questions on geiko and maiko, then please feel free to ask. I'm still learning myself, but I'll try my best to answer them .

You're very welcome. It's not too much information at all. I think it's really convinient, but I tent to ramble a bit myself.

And in all honesty, I don't know yet. >< I started reading a few things on old-style geisha recently due to a reawakened interest on Japanese culture, and I found your photos by chance. They inspired me to write, but all I really have down are a few names that I'd like to use. Other than that, I have nothing so far.

The garden farther into the teahouse is even more beautiful, but I think this teahouse entryway is the best I've ever seen.

Makiko was very stylish for her erikae, I was really happy to see what she was wearing. The pines on her kimono always looked especially lovely when she was in a garden.

I love that garden, I've wanted to get a good picture of it for some time.

You should go to Japan , big events are coming up. Four of the five hanamachi (geisha districts) are going to be putting on their annual dances in April/May so I'm going to be taking loads of pictures.

dude that's so awesome! This april you say, eh? ;] Maybe Yuka-san will lemme stay with her in Osaka, and we'll go to Kyoto!

That's a good idea, Osaka isn't that far away by train (relatively). The city I live in is technically in Osaka, but I'm not that far away from Kyoto.

If you do ever get to Kyoto in April, The Miyako Odori runs the whole of April, the Kyo Odori is in the first two weeks of April, and the Kitano Odori is the last two weeks of April. The Kamogawa Odori is in May... and the Gion Odori is in November.
