Development sketch for MLP:FiM 2008 pitch bible.You all have seen Pinkie as a pegasus, now see Fluttershy when she was an earth pony.

Aww. Fluttershy. This pose really shows her "shy" demeanor. It is interesting to see this early version as an earth pony. Her interests still match. She is all into animals and nature. The two earth ponies in the early version both are into the earth in their own ways. Apple Jack is into the plant kingdom. Fluttershy is into the plant kingdom. Pinkie Pie is an earth pony in the final version. She is all into partying, so she doesn't seem naturey at first. However her family fits in well. They are into the mineral kingdom.

Fluttershy is an Earth Pony in many ways and in lots of ways it would take an Earth Pony to excel at her talents and sensitivity to the creatures. The wings though helped a lot to lend an extension to her personality and I think was a nice touch. It also made for an interesting story for her background that also benefited her character.
I changed my race too, after I was sure what I wanted to be, but it was changed, even in the middle of already establishing the character cause it suited the character better.

Well Earth Ponies are exceptionally gifted with the world around them, with plants, the earth, the sky and including with the animals. They can sense certain changes to a degree, it's almost like an intuition. Some Earth Ponies are talented with something in that area, like one Earth Pony can be really good with animals, while another one is not so good, but really good with growing gardens.
Not to go off on too much of a tangent, but a type of pony that really excels at these gifts are Alicorns. They not only encompass instincts of all three races, but if they allow their Earth Pony senses to take over, they can have extraordinary sensitivity to the earth and sky. Like Luna for example, can sense objects in space that would overwhelm an ordinary Earth Pony, but I digress.

Anyhow, with Fluttershy's handicap with flying, even though she is a Pegasus, helped express how different she was to even her own fellow Pegasus and potential for growth. She was destined for something different that is usually not something you see with Pegasus, but still had room to be a good flyer.
This made Fluttershy a complex character, but then all the other characters are well written too and complex in their own right.
Fluttershy was originally intended to be an Earth Pony, but at the last minute, almost literally, with the help of Faust's team, decided that she would be a Pegasus. I think it was a brilliant move.
I was also commenting that in some sense, I made the same drastic move with my character, changing races. Although instead of making the change before introducing the character to the public, I made the change after the character was established with other people. It still went over well and wasn't that big of an adjustment as I thought, because it was a good change and supported the character better.
Oh and Pinkie Pie originally intending to be a Pegasus, but changed during pre-production into an Earth Pony, also a brilliant move. Reason for that is her sensitivity to tell that 'things' about to happen. Like her uncanny Twitchy-Twitch quirk that she can almost read in to the imminent future, that's her Earth Pony senses, picking up on certain things happening to the world around her.

I personally think Personality should NOT equal your race. That's like saying you should be fat because you American. Your personality comes from your personal experiences and conditions. Your Race comes from Your Genes. FlutterShy's backstory is MUCH more compelling as a Pegasus, discovering her connection with nature after getting kicked out of her home. As for Pinkie, I like he flying through he 4h wall. Not wings.

Aw...Fluttershy is who I can relate with the most. I might come across as a Rarity or Twilight(a studious workaholic), but growing up, I was very much like Fluttershy. Thanks for giving birth to her!

Me too! My episode is more Hurricane Fluttershy; I had siblings who teased me a lot, and I grew up in a town where people didn't like my religion, so they teased me about it, and I became very uncomfortable to do anything, but going to high school and college and meeting awesome artist friends there helped me to become more motivated to be strong. Do you like to sing, Sonata?

Oh where to begin. I guess I should start somewhere.
I don't mean to come off sounding a bit strange (though I guess you're probably used to that), but I was actually just lying in bed thinking about this. Really, this is absolutely touching.
I was listening to some silly synth-rock or whatever it happens to be, and this popped into my head. I uh... run a blog where I use this image as the icon.. it's my new depression blog actually.. I post some really excellent artwork depicting Shy every now and then, just to please the folks that have happened upon it. It's all I really have. My friends.. I feel guilty for relying on them for emotional support. Not too sure.. what I should do about that. But it's all baby steps, right? Just little baby steps.
Anyway, your depiction of Fluttershy here, being shy of all things, is (there's just no better way to put it) perfect.
You've captured her timidness perfectly, though as I was lying there, I remembered her looking so so very sad (which seemed a perfect suit for my side-blog when I made it) but now I can see that wasn't the intention. (I certainly didn't notice she was wingless here too. funny thing, the way all the lines draw attention to her face. you tend not to notice other details)
Heh, I felt the urge to come here and say to you how absolutely lovely your work is, how absolutely touching Shy is here - though I'm sure you hear that enough as well. But then I wasn't really keen on saying anything. Intimidated. And now I'm just rambling, having lost all track of where I wanted to take this, but oh well. As long-winded as this is, it shouldn't hurt.

I really don't want to think about where I would be now, if it hadn't been for your work. It's helped me overcome so much, and continues to give me, along with the support of my new-found friends and and possible lover, the strength to want to overcome all the pain and negativity I continue to endure~
