The hand is actually supposed to be a ghost of sorts (in Skyward Sword), but the white-glove-like-quality of it reminds me a lot of Princess Peach.. or anyone else who wears white gloves for that matter.
Not familiar with the situation? In a few of the Legend of Zelda games, they have this running gag of having a hand appear out of a toilet (it usually wants paper). So yeah

If you've played mario kart on Wii-U tho there's a legend of zelda map where the coins ARE rupees, so technically they are interchangeable says Nintendo, lol, poor sonic and his rings tho(i don't know many sonic games or if there's any sonic additions to Mario games so dunno if there is a reference)

Actually found out the story behind that ghost the other day. It's a Japanese ghost story. The ghost keeps asking for paper even if you give them paper and then finally they grab the person's hair (In Japanese the word for paper and hair and god is the same. So the person just mistook what the ghost was asking for)

I love how Peach is the one calling for paper, cause in Paper Mario there IS a gag where you actually flush yourself down a toilet. It was the best scene in the entire series.
