Description It came a long way since last week!  I completed the model, rigged it, and now it's ready to be posed.  I am proud of how it looks too, I just need to rearrange the lights so it doesn't look like most of it is coming from below. I also added a background and uped its saturation so it'd be flat white. I set the render so it would pick up the caustics reflected off of the background.

Problems
- the fingers do not rotate conveniently slanted direction, in line with the contour of the round hand.  Instead I need to play around with all 3 directions since their joint pivots are not configured that way, and I cannot find a way to change it.
- the expressions are nill.  Only the mouth can move up and down, and there is not other variation yet.  I know how to move the eyes, but I still need to get around to that.  The eyebrow are modeled so they can move like real ones, but I haven't rigged them yet either, and I tried a new technique that I discovered in a tutorial and cannot get to work (setting joints on a curve path and connecting them to the eyebrows).
- ... a mesh binded to a joint skeleton takes A LONG TIME to paint weights on!  It took about LONGER to do that than just modeling!!  You'd think Kon would be a simple character to model and animate, but you realize his body needs as much points of articulation as a human since he can move as much as a human can!!

Nice textures, especially on his hands.

Your work is so good! I think even Kubo would be proud!

Don't worry - rigging ALWAYS takes much longer than modeling. That's pretty much normal and expected.

This is why joint and paint weight copypasting is a thing.

Assuming the model is symmetric, you can mirror the rigging to the other side (the other arm and leg).

Also I learned not use shadow maps with mental ray. It doesn't like those.  Use Area Lights on the scene instead and set the shadows that way.

I believe area lights didn't exist by the time shadow maps were created.

Yeah I think they were made later, which means mental ray is more suited for those. Just my theory.

Yeah I looked that up. It just has to have the vectors the same #, and in somewhat the same mirror position?

The skeleton has to be symmetric and named according to whatever convention your application requires. Even if the skeleton is symmetric, rigging symmetry may not work if the bones weren't named correctly. It's like that in most 3D applications. We have to follow conventions, and those vary from program to program.

Is this pre or post him getting the cross on the back of his head.

Either one right now.  I plan to create a cross on his head later.

I do appreciate that the fingers have a textured, felt-like appearance, though!

The main body has a bump map too but I guess it's not evident enough to show on screen.  The mane has a bump map.

Could be emphasized there due to the shading?

Gairon In reply to TheLittle1 [2017-09-27 14:46:35 +0000 UTC]

Possibly. Or I just set the bumps to be deeper there. I'm not familiar enough with those settings to be sure.
