“Are you sure he’s ready for this?” Kodi asked hesitantly. Mishka turned around and gave him an incredulous glare.
“Look at that big ball of fluff” she said, motioning to little Damon out on the ice with Nalani before the Rite of Merit ceremony began. The pup was looking at the other tokotas like they were reindeer poop on the bottom of his paw. He was too cocky for his own good, and that confidence is the exact reason Mishka saw no reason to object to him completing his first Rite at so young an age.
“Arrogance doesn’t equal talent; does he have the skill?” Both the handlers looked on at their tokotas. Kodi remembered the first time he took Nalani out to try to teach her how to fish. It had begun snowing big, fluffy flakes and all she wanted to do was chase them around and snap at them. He thought it was amusing now considering how laid back she grew up to be. He stayed out on the ice all day with her back then, trying to show her how it was done. She seemed to have little interest. Before long he just sat on the snow and looked out in the distance, hoping to find something else to amuse him. After watching some snowshoes hop around for a while none other than the little scruff of a pup Nalani came and plopped a half-eaten salmon carcass in his lap. He had missed her first kill, and for that he was regretful, but ever since that day he knew she was quite capable of this challenge. The hardest part was teaching her to NOT eat the fish.
Damon, on the other hand, was quite different. He had the looks, that part was true, but Kodi always felt like Mishka’s no-fuss attitude contributed to a false sense of confidence with him. He looked on at the dun pup in comparison to all the mature tokotas he was surrounded by and felt a pang of guilt. He shouldn’t have suggested Mishka come along, nonetheless with Damon. But it was too late now, and there was nothing he could do as the event begun with a bang.
With that blaring start fearless Damon plunged into the frigid water and Mishka loudly cheered her pretty boy on. Nalani didn’t bother to get up, she simply intensely watched her hole in the ice and waited with the patience the spirits blessed her with. Meanwhile, the pup underwater was trying to catch up to a school of assorted fish. He corralled the crowd towards Nalani’s hole in the ice and she snatched up a big salmon with ease. He managed to attain a fish from the bunch and came up from the water just as Nalani gently added her first fish to her collection basket.
“See, they’re just fine!” Miskha assured her friend with a shove to the shoulder.
“I should have made a bigger basket” Kodi replied.
