Description This took 6 months to do, textures and all. Its based on a cross between the official scale model nintendo used in its Starfox promos and in the instruction booklet, and the arwing from the 1993 Nintendo power comics.

I added a few original touches like the different paint scheme and the markings. I used a couple of scratch brushes from my favorites, (I'll get the author name once i sort through my brush folder). For modelling I used 3ds max 7 (I wish I could use blender...), and for the textures I used Gimp. I also used the best texturing tutorial ever : here

i've always been of the opinion that the original snes version of star fox had so much more style and substance to it than every later game in the series (not counting star fox 2). it just felt more real, even if the graphics were technically so much more primitive. this arwing design will always be the real and definitive arwing design in my mind - everything that came after it was just too fluffy looking in comparison and couldn't hold a candle to the original in terms of design. this original arwing always reminded me of some ship that came from an unseen galaxy in the star wars universe; every arwing design after it just seemed like something from a kid's cartoon in comparison. great render!

don't care what Nintendo say you can do a better rendering in a year then Nintendo can in a decade

If they make a new Star Fox game, I would like to see them use this design. Maybe for a prequel game. I'm glad someone shows the SNES Star Fox some love! You rock!

Thanks. I wish Nintendo would show some more love to the SNES game too...

Very nice built. I also like the fact you've chosen the more original designs as opposed to the latest one.

Thanks. The original pre-64 canon (including the ships), is my favorite really

Wasn't your former account The-Weevil?

Correct. Time for a name change, on here and AL

Woops, I hadn't noticed you were on AL too.
I tried to do the same a while back, and change to psy_commando myself, I created the destination account, but for some reason I'm reluctant to do it... Oh well.

It's reluctancy to break out of a usual habit, changing a name or a moniker can be seen as quite a large symbol I think

gamios In reply to Steven-Daniels [2010-12-09 22:58:27 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but I think the perspective of more or less starting from scratch, and transferring everything, is what really holds me back. Might end up doing it someday though.
Too bad DA won't let you change your user name...

Thanks for the advice I'll probably do it in the near future, right now I don't have too much time. It could even be my new year resolution

Doctor-G [2010-03-10 09:41:06 +0000 UTC]

Wow! This looks absolutely perfect. The SNES arwing was always my favorite, and you've done a fantastic job rendering it in high-res 3D. Instant fave

gamios In reply to Doctor-G [2010-03-12 22:55:40 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, however it's not really high-res. Its only about 10,000 polygons, and the high-res feel it has comes from the specular maps and normal heightmaps. Its the kind of resolution you would expect from a current gen fps shooter model. But, anyways, thank you.

As texture workd go (which I can never get my head around) that's really quite something. Great stuff

I must say that your 3d models and textures look far more professional than mine.

Thanks, you should check out the texturing tutorial link in the description. Without that tutorial, I would have never had such a good result.
