I agree with elmenora, I think the figures really add a lot of depth to the image by providing a sense of scale. The bright white on the creature in the water is so eye catching and I think the colors work really well together with the background. Tis a very lonesome, hollow feeling you get from viewing this piece.

I really liked the painting even before I noticed the figures near the bottom, but they make it even better with a sense of scale.
