This is my entry for the Original Character Challenge Arcane Idol. I went outside my comfort zone for this one.

Backstory:

Zariah's dream has always been that she would one day travel the world and captivate audiences everywhere with her music. She sold everything she had and left her home in search of fame with nothing but her Shakuhachi Flute. Instead of fame, she found a cruel world that crushed her dreams and left her bitter and discouraged. She saw a world where the strong took advantage of the weak and never suffered any consequences. She decided to look out for herself and use her music to earn a living.

One day Zariah came upon an elderly stranger who had been beaten, robbed and left for dead. At first, she thought about leaving the stranger and going about her business but something compelled her to help the aged woman. She nursed the woman back to health and often played music on her flute to soothe the woman's pain.

She woke one morning to find the stranger gone but she had left her a gift with a note. The note said, "Use this and you will achieve your dreams". The gift was the talisman of the Siamese Turtle. She wore the talisman but did not know what the talisman meant or what it was for.

She found a tavern called The Horned Frog whose owner agreed to pay her to entertain the patrons. One night a group of ruffians came in to rob the tavern and threatened to have their way with her. She made a wager with them. She would play her best melody ever, a melody that they would never forget, in exchange for them letting her go. They agreed but they never intended to honour the bargain. She knew that.

Zariah played her flute with all her heart. She knew this would be her last performance. When she played her flute something began to happen. The talisman of the Siamese Turtle transformed her into the Blood Piper. Her music hypnotized and paralyzed the brigands and the talisman removed their blood from their bodies. The blood was transferred to her and came to rest on her skin in the form of beautiful tattoos. Those who saw it were terrified but grateful to be saved from the robbers.

Word of her exploits spread as many told stories of criminals and wicked people who met their end at the hands of the Blood Piper. She quickly developed a cult following. Villains would come to a village and see the logo of The Horned Frog, the tavern where it all started, and would quickly leave because they knew that the logo meant the town or village was under her protection. The mere mention of her name would strike fear into any wrongdoer's heart.

So Zariah's dream had changed. No longer did she seek fame but sought to use her power to help the less fortunate and the disenfranchised. Ironically, this made her famous.

Those who took advantage of others began to live in fear. They dreaded an encounter with the Blood Piper. They knew that if they were to hear her captivating music it would be the best and also the last thing they would hear. She would captivate their hearts and then capture their souls.
