While I am an Atheist and I actually like a lot of religious work (Michelangelo? That guy was great.) I mean, Art has to sides most of the time, the Art itself and the Story it tells, if one of the two is really great, it is most of the time enough for me to like it. And with religious Artwork it's the Art itself that makes it for me (Sometimes the story too, but the Art most of the time is the driven force here)

Well, technically they do have a right to dispense snarky comments (freedom of speech and all), but that doesn't mean they should. Personally I've never understood bashing art. Expressing disagreement with an art piece's theme is fine, and giving pointers for improvement (critiquing) is fine, but leaving a snarky comment just because? What exactly does that accomplish other than making you look immature?Β Β

I may not be religious, but I do draw religious figures from time to time if my parents make a request, as they are both Christian. :I
Don't hate on artwork. If you want to critique, do it NICELY.Β

I hear that, and I'm all for civility.
But understand that there is a context there.
A lot of us grew up in schools where we had to "pledge allegiance" in recognition of your every morning, were forced to undergo religious indoctrination, and still live under a government where your religion wields a lot of power in opposing gay marriage, fighting birth control, and waging wars against Muslims.
If you feel threatened and hurt because only 80% of people think how you think, you might have pretty thin skin.
Just imagine how bad it would be to be in the minority, right?Β

THIS.
People treat 'theories' as the synonym of 'fact'.
Evolution =/= solid proved fact, like air and oxygen.
In fact, this, 'fact' *sarcasm*, has many errors, holes, bumps, and mistakes.

There are also not religious people that draw religious things, because they like a certain piece of the Bible (one is a my friend, she drew the Pope and she was inspired by the Bible several times, yet she's not Christian).
So you shouldn't assume people have certain beliefs just because of the topic of their drawings.
Because of my art and my opinion, I was considered a nazi by self proclaimed leftists (I'm not nazi, I'm just right winged), or, because I like Norway and some of my characters look vikings, people assume I'm from Norway (I would be happy if this was true).

I have the feeling that most militant atheists act the way they do sort of out of revenge from someone in their lives who was militant Christian (I would imagine a loved one who is difficult to avoid, such as a parent).
A conversation like this might come up...
~~~
"Do you believe Jesus is our lord and savior?"
"Well, not exactly... I'm pretty sure he was a decent individual, if he existed, but I have a hard time believing..."
"DEVIL WORSHIPER!!! WITCH!"
"Wow, these Christians suck.Β Every single one of them."
~~~
And now (Although, the previous still exists):
~~~
"You don't believe in any of that make-believe stuff, do you?"
"Well, having a defined afterlife seems nice, and I think I owe my existence to some relatable being other than random forces of nature..."
"FUCK YOU AND EVERYONE WHO "
"Wow, these atheists suck.Β Every single one of them."
~~~
Who started it?Β Doesn't matter when groups are concerned.Β Go on, hate all the left-handed while you're at it because one of "them" looked at you funny.Β What a shame.

I am Atheist and I agree. Just because you don't believe it doesn't mean you can't enjoy nice art work. I enjoy a lot of Christian artwork but I don't believe it, I look past what religion it is and enjoy a wonderful piece of art. as should all religions.Β

DudeWheresMyLion [2014-02-17 15:56:05 +0000 UTC]
Exactly.Β
I hate how people find it "okay" to bash people who are religious, but if someone bashes non-religious people, it's the end of their world.Β
But just because you can post what you want on DA doesn't mean you're allowed to harass others with it. I hate how some people want respect, equality and tolerance, but then turn around, bash people for not agreeing with them and name call. That's not tolerance, it's not equality, and it surely won't bring you respect in any form. Respect is earned, not just passed out like a pamphlet.Β

For the people making the argument that "it's a Public Site, people can say anything they want."
--That still does not make it socially excusable to be a douchebag. By that logic, you would justify a random strangerΒ walking into a museum featuring an artist's gallery exhibition that had the same picture, spit the same comments towards the artist's face--and then say: "Oh, the museum was a public space, I was just exercising my freedom of speech."
Religious contexts aside, it's common decency people

Apparently, militant atheists are a super special kind of atheist called anti-theists.Β The name comes from the fact that not only do they not believe in a god, they feel the need to make sure everyone who does gets an ear full. They really are quite similar to the militant religious people they claim to hate so much.

Hardly a dick move. A dick move would be to post something in a public place, then bitch when people say something that you do not like. If you don't like it, don't allow comments or simply don't post. Posting or talking in a public venue or forum etc. means you are consenting to people discussing it.
