Description "Mystras, the 'Wonder of the Morea', was built as an amphitheatre around the fortress erected in 1249 by William of Villehardouin. Reconquered by the Byzantines, then occupied by the Turks and the Venetians, the city was abandoned in 1832, leaving only the breathtaking medieval ruins, standing in a beautiful landscape. The complex of the ruins of Mystras offers the image of a city with a brilliant destiny that was deserted by men and threatened by the return of encroaching vegetation, which is splitting the walls and covering the slopes, thus destroying here and there fragile traces of history." (Extract from whc.unesco.org/en/list/511)

The city was divided into four layers. The lower city, the middle city, the high city and the citadel (fortress) at the summit of the hill.

beautiful    The doorway is wonderful with its side window and all those mini-arches on top. I took a quick look at glossary terms for classical architecture: they are modillions (ornamental brackets) topped by the flat corona topped by what I called mini-arches (I couldn't find a term for them!)
I like how you took the picture from the narrower area and from below, so we have to look forward and upward where it all opens up. The doorway is the focus. And you went through it

Bonsoir itsy bitsy of french language.  Merci pour tes commentaires , thanks for your always valuable comment .... it is me with my itsy bitsy english

The "modallions" are indeed the lower part below the mini-arches.

I am looking a bit around.  Mystras was an important byzantium (late byzantium) city.  It became the important byzantium city especially after the attack of after the saccage of Constantinople (Istanbul) by the Venitian in 1204 ...  here just to say  that Mystras is a byzantium style and if you look at byzantium style architectural you will notice that they are very fun of a large quantity of small/medium/large round arches like the ones in the photo ...

And of course I did went through the doorway ... who wouldn't ... but sorry no photo from the other side

Bye and thanks again
