Description This is an intersting emoticon here. The blue Emoticon is just sitting there, then he realizes something is different about the yellow emoticon. He circles him to see if he can figure it out, and finds that the yellow one is actually flat. This idea came around after i finished with the CD emoticon earlier today.

Very nice effect when the blue guy twists the yellow one.

Thanks. It was something I worked on with the CD emote test first, then converted over to this one.

Aw I like that. That's a neat idea I don't think I've ever tried to make a flat emoticon, or a spinning flat thing; I'd imagine it to be a little tricky to do! My only tiny nitpick is that if it were up to me perhaps the blue guy would stop a little while to look at the yellow dude when he's reached the other side, just to sort of look-see if he's also weird from this side.

If that makes sense.

But I like it!

Well done and hey congrats on the DD

YOu don't like emoticons, but you still make the faces using the text? I'm sorry, but I don't see the different. They both represent the same thing. ((not trying to be mean, I just find that strange personally))

ippus In reply to GibbyGibson [2006-02-11 03:04:54 +0000 UTC]

Ah, because most emots are yellow and round and generally very ugly (Uhg...the MSN one ;_; they are so utterly ugly, especially the big smily one where the face looked like a psychopath >__<

I would much rather not use text emoticons either hwoever...people seem to assume that I'm really pissed at them if I don't o_O;

Really good job on this one.

It really does look flat, you pulled that off perfectly. I wouldn't have thought of this. I also like the way Mr. Blue walks around Mr. Yellow. The pixel progression makes it look like he's actually walking in a circle, not just from left to right, then back again but backwards. Everything is quite smooth, and the expressions are flawless.

Thanks. When "Mr. Blue" was walking around "Mr. Yellow," I had trouble on the ends, to make it look like a turn and not just a change of direciton. I must have played with the hands and eyes for ages (it felt like).

I value hearing that you like it. It makes me feel like the work I spent on it worth it. Thanks.

I love this piece, particularly the remarkable rendering of a half-spin circle in 2 dimensional space. That's a hard trompe l'oeil to pull off it, and you did so flawlessly. Although his concept was quite different than yours here, =E-motive 's :static: emote takes a similar approach to the "other" (in this case the flat smiley among 3 dimensional ones). I love this kind of work for the same reason I love you bouncing avatar emote: they cross the proscenium arch, they break their own barriers.

Outstanding work, GibbyGibson. Thank you for it.

On a unrelated topic, how often do you presume on releasing the Emote Expo articles? Bi-weekly?

Bi-weekly is the plan, yes ma'am. We're running a little late on the upcoming issue, but if we get cracking this weekend we'll still be able to pull it off relatively easily.

I really love this one! You have used your "signature" gradient that is so bright and cheerful, it really adds to the emote well. Two things I am a little unsure of here...

Firstly, I don't really like how the yellow emote blinks. I guess it's each to his own, but to me it seems like the eyes slowly disapper. I use a different kind of technique where you go from 3 pixels vertically to two pixels horizontally. It works for me, but I guess it depends on what you like.

The other thing, is that when the blue first "spins" the yellow emote, I couldn't tell if he actually span him all the way around, or just pushed him slightly and then pulled him back. But then I noticed that they eyes appear again, so he can't be spinning all the way around. I'm not really sure how to make this a little clearer, but overall a very nice emote with some top notch animation!

GibbyGibson In reply to zacthetoad [2006-02-04 13:51:25 +0000 UTC]

We already talked about this in the chats, but I will go ahead and repeat what I said (for just in chase those people who come and read this later on).

The blinking is how I have always done my blinking, but I do agree that it is slightly too slow. Normally it is a .1 second delay with the movement of the blinking, and I believe it is a .15 second delay with the hopping deal in this emoticon, so that was a compromize I made. I can go back and see what can be done though. Maybe I can just get rid of the blink when the blue one is behind the yellow one, for I personally do not feel it moves too slow with the other two blinks.

To the second deal, he is just pushing him slightly and then pulling him back; hince the eyes still being visible. I did not like how it looked when he spun the yellow one all the way around, so I stuck with the "well, I look around you, noticed something different, and so I decided to make sure and twist you slightly." part.

As always, I really apprececiate the indepth discussion we had here. It helps greatly in knowing what others see out of what I make, and how I can work later on to make it even more understandable, later on. Thanks.

Blue and Yellow are complamentory colors, or they are opposate the color wheel. I thought it would be good to use colors that work toether, and not clash that much.
