Stockholm Syndrome? Seriously? It's not stockholm syndrome. I think you need you to learn the difference between a story and a actual syndrome. Not cool of you to say something like that.

Really? Only Stockholm Syndrome doesn't generally begin or end with a refusal to put up with mistreatment. Look at Belle's interactions with the Beast for a second, really look at them. At no point, after her initial fear in the scene where she bargains with the Beast for her father's freedom, does she show any of the typical fear common to cases of Stockholm Syndrome. When the Beast roars at her in the West Wing she gets out of there, and probably wouldn't have come back if he hadn't been injured after saving her from wolves and needed medical attention. Even after that, she refuses to take the blame for the incident, and when the Beast yells at her she yells right back. After that, the Beast starts treating her better, and it is only after he has started doing that that Belle starts to warm up to him a little. In fact, from that point on it is Belle, not the Beast, who has the upper hand in their relationship. Even then, the Beast's harshness lasts for one night and one night only, and from then on he is nothing but kind to her, if somewhat awkwardly so. It always bothers me when people go on about Beauty and the Beast being about Stockholm Syndrome because Belle is so far from subjugated throughout the film.

I completely agree. I hate when people say "Beauty and the Beast" is really about Stockholm Syndrome or abusive spouses. For me, the story is about looking past one's appearances or rough exteriors, and seeing the good in them. That's the reason why I love all the different versions of the story, and one of the reasons why the Disney version is my all-time favorite movie.

Glad to meet a fellow-fan. I know it's all meant in fun (well, most of it), butΒ this sort of thing really winds me up, and it's good to know it isn't taken seriously.

I don't think this based off of the movie alone. I think the drawing is much closer to the story.

Ok, then, let's look at the original story. Beauty is sent to the home of the Beast, who...treats her well from the very beginning, is in most versions presented as kind and good-natured, and when she asks to go home? Lets her. There is never any indication that she fears him after she has got over the initial shock of his monstrous appearance, and she shows none of the hostility to her would-be rescuers (in this case her father and sisters) that Stockholm cases usually do. The story was originally meant to reassure girls about arranged marriages, that a husband chosen for you might be as good or better than any one chose for oneself. This was probably a great comfort to many girls who had to submit to arranged marriages for their families' sake, or to secure their own futures.
