Description
Daughter of Helios and Hecate and sister of Medea, she was a sorceress too. She lived on the island of Eea, luring men into drinking with her and then turning them into beasts such as lions, dogs, wolves and pigs. Odysseus encountered her with his shipmates when reteurning home from the Trojan War. Some of his men were transformed into animals, so he asked Hermes for help. The god gave him an herb to counteract the effects of Circe's magic; Odysseus didn't turn into an animal, instead he forced Circe to confess and turn all the beasts back to humans. The hero stayed with Circe for a month; during this time she sent him into the Underworld to question the diviner Tiresia to know his future.
