Description Download for giant giant size!

This was made for someone (), but I'm hoping that others might find it useful.

I've never made a tutorial, with photos or otherwise, ever before. If someone could tell me if this makes one lick of sense would be greatly appreciated.

The disclaimer:
I am not all that great at needle-felting. I am entirely self-taught and I kinda just make things up as I go along. I am positive that there are better/more efficient/intelligent ways of doing everything that I do.

~~~
Check it out: took a stab geddit? geddit? XD at a cube:
Awesome ^______^
My attempt to explain stuff, at least. Let me know if I can clarify anything!!
You did a wonderful job explaining it.
This was exactly what I needed!
I am attempting my first needle felted piece for one of my SAR K9 teammates. His first K9 partner passed away last year, and I have a couple bags of her fur, that I was going to attempt to make a little figure of her from. My first attempt... a dismal failure. It's just not felting up decently. It's all warped with big lumps and bits that don't lay right and that have felted up into pads that lay wrong and all sorts of awful.
I think I am going to use your polyfil core technique though, and try making the main body and then felting the dog hair onto that, and see if it goes any better. At the very least, I can learn what I'm doing wrong on the polyfil, which I can get a heck of a lot more of than my very limited supply of dog hair from a passed pooch!
Thanks tons for this!!!
Wow.. You must've had so much patience to put this all together! Taking all the pictures in between felting. Writing descriptions for all of them. DX It's a lot of work! Makes me want to find my needles and give it another shot. XD;;
It took ...a while. Unfeasibly long really, which is a shame 'cause I'd like to make one for a whole robot. wait. you have felting stuff? You must felt things! And then share photos!
I hear you. D: I was thinking about giving up the one I've been working on, but I'm trying hard to stick to it. Kudos for pulling it all together and sharing! I only have four needles. I lose them frequently so I haven't managed to make anything. One 36, two 38s and one 40. (Which one's the biggest, and which the smallest? XD;; They're all so tiny, I can't tell.)
I haven't forgotten *pokepoke* 36 is the biggest and 40 the smallest. I use my 38 most often though.
It is quite late, you should go to bed. *zzzzzz*
I'll get more posted on the weekend. :3 If you want, I'll keep doing the step-by-step. XD;;
It is really necessary to have a whole bunch of different needles, or is just having a few enough? D:
*a week later* x_x sorry!
I have sizes from 32 to 42, I use all of them except for the 36 - which was, strangely enough, the only needle I had when I started. I completed Optimus with a 36 needle - it can be done, but it makes it so much easier with all the other sizes.
If you want, I would still like to see the step-by-step. But only if you want!
there's nothing wrong with being self taught
definitely a handy guide. Thank you for posting and sharing it ^_^
I always have the feeling that I'm missing out on some essential trick to felting (like teaching yourself to use Photoshop vs taking a class - so much more to learn!) but it's all good.
It's a hobby. It makes me happy. That fulfills all the requirements I have! (:
I'm pleased that it makes sense to others - it was definitely an interesting exercise, having to stop and figure out why I'm doing and why.
It does. I am a rather visual learner and seeing the steps is what helps a lot.
So definitely kudos and cookies to you.
That looks pretty thick. How dense are your needlefelts? They seem a lot more defined (and thus I assume denser) than most needlefelts out there...
Also: good job. Needlefelt tutorials are awesome.
GlassCamel In reply to k-times-two [2011-05-27 02:24:57 +0000 UTC]
Really dense! XD I poke 'till I can't poke no more! Different fibres can be felted denser than others; I use a lot of llama for my cores and I think that it felts up nice and solid like poly-fil here.
Thank you, I'm glad that it makes sense, sort of. I would've loved some tutorials back when I started felting! My instructions consisted of: Wool + Needles + Poking = Shapes
k-times-two In reply to GlassCamel [2011-05-27 03:03:34 +0000 UTC]
Yeah... wow. That's so much effort. I made my Mew with relatively dense felting, which took far too long. XD Personally, I don't felt densely, for the most part; it seems to come naturally though as I make bigger objects. Which... well, anyways, I wish it was the other way around. Would've saved me a lot of time.
Yeah. Well, it's hard to experience the magic of needlefelting until you've seen it yourself. (As paltry as my first instructions were. Luckily, it's quite easy to improve on the fly with needlefelts.)
That was an awesome tutorial! It really is a testament to how very patient you are; knowing how much work goes into a simple cube, makes me appreciate the fine detail of your work that much more. (not like I didn't already worship it! XD) No wonder Hound feels so dense; I didn't realize the fibers were that tightly packed inside! *is even more impressed*
I just love Optimus with the energon cube; he looks so pleasantly surprised. XD
GlassCamel In reply to Zanne [2011-05-27 02:43:27 +0000 UTC]
Super dense and un-squishable, yup.! (It is my understanding that most needle felters do not make their pieces quite so dense, I don't know why I do... )
'he looks so pleasantly surprised.' XD he shouldn't, he always has a cube at hand. I bet he'd be pretty shocked if I found his long-missing rifle. XD
Zanne In reply to GlassCamel [2011-05-29 06:34:23 +0000 UTC]
Huh, I think in your case at least, it's a good thing they are so dense; your FeltFormers having so many right angles, and them being somewhat poseable, makes having dense limbs kind of a necessity, I would think. Plus this makes them much more likely to hold up to handling. *pokes Hound for the umpteenth time*
*laughs* Optimus is a lush, apparently. XD Aww, poor rifle; it's probably stuck to the bottom of something fuzzy, I imagine those things act a bit like velcro. XD
Yes!! XD I lose more toys that way! And yes, there is far more energon/oil/wine around here than weapons ;;^^ But always with responsibility!
