This is my entry for 's concept competition.So yeah...
This is my Piccolo redesign: Indian themed with a hint of Steampunk.
Well...that is Hindu with a hint of arabic influence, and conspicuous looking armour....
The thinking behind this... I'm not sure. I've always liked the idea of a Steampunk DBZ.... oh the possibilities... Piccolo in a Victorian suit, om nom nom...
But one thing that always occured to me with the character of Piccolo (and by default Kami and King Piccolo) was the idea of the Trimurti. Hindu Holy Trinity. The Creator, the Maintainer and the Destroyer. So I thought, ooo... India.
The pattern on the black scarf is Kali's symbol, and I wanted to give him a Kali Talika, but I couldnt find any examples.... so I went with Vishnu. Which works out well anyway. Didn't really get anything Shiva oriented....but meh. At least I gave him a watch.
I wasn't too adventurous.... I did originally plan on making him human, but I chickened out.
Oooh and the 'Ravana' thing? He's the Hindu Demon King ;D
Awesome.
So anyway. I had loads of fun with this.... I think I've learnt more on photoshop working on this than I've learnt over the past year.

ah no worries.
um, a tilaka (if I can remember) is a religious symbol painted on the worshipper's forehead or face. Something similar to a bindi, and they are different colours and patterns depending on different factors, like which god or goddess or who you are. Here's a wiki link [link]
Ravana is a character from Indian mythology, he's King of Demons (or something to that effect) and is sometimes depicted as a good guy and sometimes as a bad guy - but he's the villian in the 'Ramayana' (a classical epic). I'm not quite sure as to all the details but I always thought he was quite cool.

This is gorgeous! For some reason, the idea of Piccolo's hands with the intricate henna tattoos are SO sexy! I think with the pointed fingernails he has, it totally works! LOVE this!

henna is the bestest thing ever, I was originally worried that it might be too feminine...but then I remembered that he wasn't really a guy so I figured HELL YES LETS DO THIS. XD

I really dig all the research you did into trying to meld cross-cultures into a single creation -- very fresh & original! Well done!
I thought I might add in a comment as I am a shakti worshipper: "The pattern on the black scarf is Kali's symbol, and I wanted to give him a Kali Talika, but I couldnt find any examples." For the Shakti tikka (one of the traditional brow marks for Goddess Worshippers), the bindu is very similar to what other shaivite / saddhu Hindus use: three white horizontal lines. with a red (kumkum) dot under it. The kumkum-tikka is usually where any other bindu would be, and the lines above it can be either very narrow or go across the entire forehead. (ascetics of more left-handed approach in Hinduism tend to paint nearly their entire face like warpaint instead of very meticulously drawing it on.) Different areas of India draw them differently, like regional folk art almost. (even in the us at different Mandirs + Ashrams, the tikka marks are ever-variable!)
I'm glad to see someone else bringing religious/spiritual connections into thier art + characters. The idea of a 'holy trifecta' is the same accross so many cultures and yet calls to many different emotions.
keep up the beautiful art. You could make some very good money by putting out your illustration services for people looking for commissions.

Ahhhh right. I did see that one! I didn't notice it was for the Goddess Worshippers though. In the end I think, I went for the one which I thought looked the best on him... but I did make sure I went for symbolic colours.

I also like the fact you kept it similar to the original Namekian wardrobe designs. Arabic/Indian-ish design. Nyeah nyeah yessss......
