ah. I've had a kind of bummer summer I guess you could say. I've been having trouble relaxing for a long time now. lots of things going on. one of them is much better since yesterday and i'm feeling better now. and only NOW i get to finally have a vacation but it'll be fun. I'm also almost done writing a new song too. May be my best yet

👍: 0 ⏩: 1
golden-3point14 In reply to DrPuffbean [2009-08-12 19:53:11 +0000 UTC]
Heh.
It goes at the ending of polite sentences not including verbs. Like, "I AM PRETTY." Or "YOU ARE MY FATHER?!" (Well, that would be DESU KA, because ka is a question particular...)
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
DrPuffbean In reply to golden-3point14 [2009-08-12 19:59:14 +0000 UTC]
So... what does it DO? Does it tell you I'm being polite? And... wait doesn't a sentence HAVE to have a verb in order to be a scentence?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
golden-3point14 In reply to DrPuffbean [2009-08-12 20:08:12 +0000 UTC]
It ends the sentence. It's polite.
"I am pretty" has no verb. Unless you consider "am" a verb.
It was originally explained to me as "desu is the 'am' or 'subject is adjective' ending. So what you say in Japanese is "I pretty am." Or sometimes "Pretty ocean is." Desu would am or is...politely. You can have sentences without it, but it's not as formal. And the Japanese are just formal.
It's weird?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
DrPuffbean In reply to golden-3point14 [2009-08-12 20:20:26 +0000 UTC]
XD that is indeed wierd. And I do consider "am" a verb... isn't it? O.o The only wierd thing I can think of in french is that If you wanted to say "I am not pretty", the "not" is actually two words and they go around the "am". "I not am not pretty." Je ne suis pas belle.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
golden-3point14 In reply to DrPuffbean [2009-08-12 22:09:15 +0000 UTC]
Well, sort of, which is why I said unless you consider it a verb. In which DESU is that verb. Verbs go at the end of the sentence anyway. But it's really not, in Japanese. The only things in the sentence, if it ends in desu, are nouns and adjectives.
Interesting. XD Japanese has a double negative type thing too. "zenzen" means not at all, and you take the verb ending "masu" and turn it into "masen" which is the negative form. "Watashi wa zenzen hashirimasen." I don't run at all. |D
