Story:

The trip to Canada had been so long, and Clara was happy that she had been able to take a few days to rest before the endurance race begun. The race started in the early morning, with the sun barely above the hills. Clara was excited about it and a little bit nervous. Her hands were shaking slightly as she secured her bags behind Gillis' saddle. The big horse seemed calm as always. He was very used to be on his own, and was a very confident horse. He was Claras' best friend. Four years earlier, when Clara was only 15, she had gotten in contact with the previous owner of the horse, and started to take care of him a couple days in the week. This continued for three years, and Clara wanted to buy him badly. During the years in High School, she worked as much as she could during nights and weekends to get money to buy him. When she graduated, she had just enough money to buy him, which she did. She was the happiest girl in the world the day she signed the contract.

Later, Clara got in contact with Rickard on the Golden Meadows' Estate, who promised her lend a stall for Gillis if Clara worked for them as a touring guide. She accepted the offer without thinking twice, and ever since the day she moved Gillis to the Estate, she had been working as a guide. She loved the job, truly. She had been able to think about her past and sort some things out for herself.

As the race begun, she took off in a steady pace, trying to get some distance in between herself and the starting point as quick as possible. The air was crisp, not very unlike the early spring air in Sweden. Gillis walked eagerly, excited about the new environment. Though, he was still very relaxed. He was the perfect endurance and touring horse, really. A steady leader who never had a doubt. Clara watched as the scenery changed before her eyes as they walked through the nature of Algonquin Park. She hadn't afforded to travel much before, so she had never seen mountains like this ever in her life. As the sun started to rise above them, their colors changed from light blue, to pink, yellow and orange. It was amazingly beautiful, and Clara felt so lucky to be able to be there. During the dawn, she could see the silhuettes of moose and deer, which amazed her. The smell of the trees and the sound of the birds and Gillis' hooves against the ground made her relax. She almost forgot that she had a deadline, and that she was going to be having to cross that river in a few hours.

Gillis walked on steadily, only missing a step a couple of times. As the hours went by, Clara started to get tired. The whole thing had made her tense, and as the tension dropped, she started to lose energy. She didn't want to stop, as that would made them lose time, so she managed to eat some food out of the saddle bags and drink some water. A few times she got off Gillis' back and walked beside him, to let him rest his back a little. At one point, just a one or two hours walk away from the Barrons Canon, they stopped beside a small river. Clara let Gillis drink and eat some of the grass, and she refilled her own bottle and sat down to rest her legs. She allowed themselves to rest for forty-five minutes, and figured that it would be better in the end. She knew that they were going to need a lot of energy to cross that river. The weather was really nice, although it was still pretty chilly. However, Clara didn't mind. She was used to be outside in all sorts of weather. Nature didn't bother her. Instead, she felt very connected to it. She sensed that nature had some sort of spirit, a power of life that she couldn't explain. That was why she really adored touring and riding in the National Park back home in Sweden, and why she loved being in Canada right now. She made sure to enjoy it as much as she could, and took the opportunity to write down some of her thoughts that had come to her during the last hours in the book she had brought. When the 45 minutes had passed Clara got up on Gillis and they continued their journey.

You're welcome! Yes, this kind of back-lit setting can be quite tricky, I think you pulled it off perfectly though
