Description The flat colors of version one of my redesigned Grimlock. I decided to test out the G1 coloration. I think it looks too close to Megatron's colors. This is a redesign for the movie versions, remember. I might try some camo-style colors, because I saw another movie-style Grimlock piece on DeviantART with that idea, and I liked it. I might also try to give him a more natural color scheme, as if it were copied from the T. rex he scanned. Prime's flames came from a truck with flames, after all.

My idea (and I think I heard this somewhere else, maybe on IMDB) is that the Dinobots crash to Earth in the late cretaceous period, in search of the Allspark, or some other kind of important plot device... er, artifact. They're not total stooges like in the cartoon, and they're definately not godzilla-esque pseudo-dinosaurs. They would be intelligent and cunning.

To clear up the confusion with Snarl (Stegosaurus) and Sludge ("Brontosaurus"), since neither of their respective species survived to the late cretaceous period, I'll replace them with a few cretaceous equivilants. Maybe Shantungosaurus, a 50+ foot long Hadrosaur, for Sludge, and an ankylosaur for Snarl.

Actually, "Snarl" sounds like a good 'Raptor name. I'm tempted to see how feathered dinosaurs would translate into the Bayformers universe...

I was going to bring up the dreaded Snarl vs Slag debate, but instead, I'm going to translate the author's notes into Grimlock.

The flat colors of version one of me Grimlock. Me Grimlock decide to test out G1 colors. Me Grimlock think it look too close to Megatron colors. This redesign for the movie. Me Grimlock might try some camo color, because me Grimlock saw nother movie-style Camo Grimlock on DeviantART, and me Grimlock like. Me Grimlock might also try to give more natural color, like it copied from T. rex me Grimlock scan. Stupid Truck-bot's flames come from truck flames, so me Grimlock stripes come from T rex stripes!

Me Grimlock idea (and Me Grimlock think me Grimlock heard somewhere else, maybe IMDB) that Dinobots crash to Earth in late cretaceous in search of Shinyspark, or other plot device... er, thingy. Dinobots not total stooges like in cartoon, and definately not godzilla-dinosaurs. Dinobots RUUUUUULE!

Snarl(platey spikey-saur) and Sludge (Brontosaurus), no make it to late cretaceous period, so me Grimlock replace them with cretaceous Dinobots(Me Grimlock smart). Maybe duck-face-saur for Sludge(No Dinobots bigger than me Grimlock!), and an armor-cluby-saur for Snarl.

"Snarl" sound like good Raptor name! Me Grimlock want to see how feather-saurs would look like in Bayformers universe...

With a setting of when and where the Dinobots got their "beast-modes", (North America, 65 mya) I would like to make a little review:

Grimlock: Tyrannosaurus (duh)

Slag: Triceratops (double-duh)

Sludge: Conveniently, there was actually a sauropod in North America at the time; Alamosaurus, 70 ft long, 30 tons, found in New Mexico and Texas.

Snarl: Ankylosaurus works just perfectly.

Swoop: Personally, I don't like the idea of Swoop as a Pteranodon. First, because it had already been extinct for 5 million years. That might not sound like a lot, but humans haven't even been around that long. Secondly, despite a wingspan of 30 ft, Pteranodon's body wasn't actually much bigger than a turkey's, the wings themselves were pretty long and narrow, and it barely stood much taller than a person. I think a better substitute would be Quetzalcoatlus; it's bigger overall, with a wingspan of 40 ft, (the wings were comparitivaly shorter) its body was almost twice as big as a man's, and it was as tall as a giraffe.

I've seen some very interesting illustrations of a hypothetical (but very likely) quadrupedal walking stance for Quetzalcoatlus. I like the idea of Swoop being an Azhdarchid. I like all of these ideas.

Unfortunately, Hollywood is not this smart...

What do you mean by "Godzilla-esque psuedo-dinosaurs"? What makes Godzilla a psuedo-dinosaur?

Godzilla was a dinosaur in name only. It was not built like a dinosaur, and no sensible person would call it a dinosaur. Its anatomy was more akin to an obese humanoid than anything remotely archosaurian. It stood vertically on its hind legs and dragged its tail behind it. Visually, not a dinosaur. G1 Grimlock shares the same false features with Godzilla: the same upright posture, a dragged tail. Its body is awkward and cumbersome, especially considering Grimlock was supposed to be a fighter.

This is why I called its G1 version a "Godzilla-esque pseudo-dinosaurs." You can call it a dinosaur, a crocodile, or a puppy. You can call it whatever you want, but visually, it's not a dinosaur unless it retains a dinosaurian shape. This also applies to any other dinosaur designed by the standards of the 1950's.

Y'know... the Transformers Animated Dinobots, while still borderline retarded, were much more consistent with the current fossil record.
