Description LOOK. A PERSON. 8D

One of my characters, Saveja, shortly after running away from her home. With an absent father and a neglectful mother, and furthermore no relatives she knows of... there's no place to go.

...Ahem. Now that my introduction is done, let me say this:

HANDS. GOD, HANDS ARE HARD.

Thank you very much.

wow. Fabulous! The eerie silhouettes of tree branches really add to the mostly abstract background. Great work!

And hands are hard. I cannot believe you did this in only 2 hours!

She looks like she's lost or feels out of place. You did a great job on the hands, they're very convincing!

Thanks! That's the look I was aiming for. I'm pretty proud of the hands, they took a while but I think they added a lot to my pic.

Hands ARE hard. D8

Gorgeous work! I like the focus of this piece, how she's looking up, and everything kinda points up there, too.

I... I dunno... I just felt inspired. That's all there is to setting moods.

When I force myself to draw something for the sake of drawing... There's not much joy in it. It takes a long time and yet comes out flat. There will be something missing.

But when a poignant idea comes into mind, that's when you really feel the push forward. When you feel the character, you can convey so much more.

Which is why it helps a ton when you're changing your facial expression according to what you're drawing... Even if you can't see yourself, the muscles in your face... I dunno, somehow send an image to your brain for a mental reference.

Sometimes, in the middle of drawing or simply surfing the web I'd stand up from my chair and suddenly pace back and forth through the hallway while making body gestures. These help too. When I get back on the chair I have a feel of what to draw.

When you really have an emotion in mind that you really feel and truly want to convey, This also makes you sensitive to the tiniest of details that bother you... You tweak it little by little to get just the thing you're looking for. It's a slow process... But very worth it.

A single line can change an entire picture. So if you have the urge to put it there, don't hesitate.

When it comes to humans, I have a complete inability to draw them in color first... I always start off black and white or otherwise an almost monochrome scheme.

This sort of helps somehow with setting a mood, since contrast is vital to showing how powerful the mood is.

Compare Simoun here and Tempari .
Even in my older works I preferred Monochromatic schemes in my people...

My humans are heavily inspired by `alexds1 's works. The Black & white style I have, too, is from him~

Patience. Sometimes, try drawing different things for a change... Different body styles, different ways of showing expressions. Even when I take a break from drawing a subject, like humans, I suddenly find myself getting better at them even if I didn't practice much. You can learn a lot of things indirectly.

When I sidetracked from my 'serious' detailed drawings for a while and did Neopets portraits, I think I actually became better at more extravagant works. Why? Because I took my eyes off detailing and focused on color and composition.

Cartooning, despite simplifying structures, helps in learning anatomy better since you need a good grip of anatomy to make a cartoon style appealing. Deviate for a change. have fun. Enjoy the occasional change in subject.

Make extremely long comments so that you have a drive to draw an idea that has been in your mind for the entire day.

Don't worry, Elky, we're all still learning. Look around. Look at art and see all the things that help set a mood... Both intense moods and soft moods.

Putting the idea down on paper or in an art program is only a small part of art. The core of art is observation... A good observer can better convey his or her feelings and so can produce much better works.
