Description An amethyst geode, one of the most difficult things I've ever made in 3D... These inner glows have not been easy to get, so I really hope you like it! If there's some geologist or gemstones fan in the house please, tell me what do you think! And if not doesn't matter, all the crits and comments will be welcome!

awesome render dude! did you modeled in max?

Yes, all modeled in Max and rendered with Vray. Thank you!

This is awesome too! Very realistic from the matrix to the crystal points! I just feel the need to take a brush and dust clean it - wouldn't have added the white spots (dust?)

GranDosicua In reply to Schmiegel [2015-10-23 09:27:29 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! The white spots... well, the shouldn't be there, I wanted to make some dust and marks and the didn't came as they must... But I only realized that after the long time rendering, so I didn't change'em. The new Corona method is better, you know

... makes me want to try it!
Just curious, how long does it tak for you to make such a scene? When I start to create a gem I end up spending the spare time of a few days and having a bunch of test renders worth some additional hours of render time.

GranDosicua In reply to Schmiegel [2015-10-24 09:03:07 +0000 UTC]

This one took me a few days, because I needed time to find a good technique, but the model is not difficult and newer scenes can be finished in a day or so.

First I want to say you did a really great job.

I have some critique though, and I hope it helps you.

The main thing I noticed was that you don't have enough shadows (hardly any that I can see) in the stones. Amethysts usually have really dark shadows throughout really bright sides of their crystal formations. It helps make the colorful, glowy parts really pop out!

The only other thing is the amount of speckled bright light you have throughout them, too much. This is what made me get a closer look when I noticed the picture because it looked similar to an amethyst, but not, at the same time.

I hope this helps. Great job, again!

GranDosicua In reply to NaturallySpazzy [2014-08-19 15:50:40 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'm not sure if I've understood you, but I think the shadow issue is not my fault at all; I mean, it is, and it's not. I don't "paint" the shadows in the render, is 3D Max who calculates them based in the light system I put in the scene. In this case, the main light source is almost vertical respect to the mesh, so that's why there's no visible shadows (only the on the ground).

The inner bright is the same, Max calculates the reflection and refraction and return a color as result, but you're right, the reflections are too bright for an amethyst, I could have made it less transparent...

Thank you so much for the critique, it will help me in future renders!

im a huge fan of gemstones and rocks and stuff, and this looks really nice! i thought it was real at first, the rocky bit on the bottom is a nice realistic touch to this. good job!

Thanks! I think the rocky bottom is a bit thin, but the important thing is that you have seen it! Those details go unnoticed most times...

Erik-Tan [2014-08-17 11:04:04 +0000 UTC]

I thought it was a photo too! I think the only thing I'd have critique on is that the insides of the crystal look a bit too sparkly. Not shiny gem sparkly, but like there's glitter inside them.

That's really my only critique. I'm sorry if it was out of line for me to say ;3; But really, this is a beautiful piece. Keep it up!

GranDosicua In reply to Erik-Tan [2014-08-17 22:06:13 +0000 UTC]

Don't worry about the comment, is absolutely welcome! I have to admit that some sparks look a bit polygonal (I don't know why) and others didn't even appear in the previews, but most gems have them; sometimes softer, like aquamarines, or even harder, like quartz or sapphires.

Thank you! Crits are the best way to improve!

4dachi In reply to Erik-Tan [2014-08-17 16:55:07 +0000 UTC]

most gems have that inside of them, actually! its either slightly cracked pieces inside of the crystal or air bubbles :v

Erik-Tan In reply to 4dachi [2014-08-18 02:34:47 +0000 UTC]

I've seen them, but for some reason it just looks glittery to me. It could just be me.

Hey Geologist here

U did a great job with the crystalline structure and the overall shape and geometry.

The internal fractures are a bit strange but are not unheard of.

10/10 for realism and general awesomeness

Thank you! Expert reviews are always welcome! I didn't have any idea of how to make a crystal, so I used different kinds as reference, and maybe look more like purple quartz than an amethyst...
