Description My first "sea storm" painting. Featuring SS. As he's one of my most involved designs, marking-wise, I figured outlining him in a breaching pose would be a good challenge.

Still, I expect there are errors here. Don't know if I conveyed a sense of there being wind very well. I haven't worked out how to paint steeper waves yet.

But I had fun with it.

Thanks. But I'll have to try another sea storm painting someday, to see if I can do better.

I keep this in my desktop rotation because of the background. To remind myself, the next storm scene I ever paint, don't leave the ocean so flat.

Thank you. I'm glad you and other watchers seem to like it, despite my gripes.

OMG !!!
This is so EPIC Orkid I love the stormy nature of the ocean and the dark sky!
This is definately one of your best work!

Oh and I'm terribly sorry if I won't be able to get your gift in time I hate being late >< but I promise to make it satisfactory <3

grayorca In reply to ShadowDagger [2012-08-10 15:21:48 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. ^_^ Of course, I think it could have been better (ocean is too flat for a storm scene). But that's just me being insecure and shortchanging myself - nothing I do is ever good enough.

About the gift: don't worry if it can't be given on the day in question. Especially when I still have yet to finish the one I've promised you.

I'll do my best on it for you ^^ , but you needn't worry about mine, I know how busy you are x3

I have my doubtful days. That's the thing: when you're self-taught, you always feel as though there's more you should know than what you've already learned.

I'm only as busy as I make myself to be these days. Likewise, I'll work on getting your gift done in a quality manner, if not a timely one.

GAAAAAAAAAAAH THE EPICNESS! <3 Maybe I can do the water for you sometime. :3 A sort of collab. Only if you want ofcourse. XD

So...as I've been saying: THIS IS EPIIIIIIIIIIIC! Everything here is epic!

grayorca In reply to Zavraan [2012-08-09 22:24:28 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, zavraan. A collab would be fun, as I will be the first to admit your backgrounds always look fantastic, whereas mine, between the outlined character and not, look slapped together with no visible blend.

Still, I appreciate you describing this as epic, relative to my other paintings. It turned out better than I thought, but at the same time, I think it could've benefited from a few more hours' work.

ATM, I don't know that I have any outlines like this one that might be ready for a collab. But I'll see if I can't come up with something by tomorrow or the day after.

Thanks again.

Oh wow! This is one my favourites from you!
(Of course it having a dark blue/purple colour scheme helps hehe) but you also drew SS beautifully here from this angle. I like how powerful you've made him look - is it me or does he look like he's grown?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

grayorca In reply to Shinymane1 [2012-08-09 21:12:09 +0000 UTC]

^_^ Thank you.

Yeah, the background is a combination of bright aqua blue, dark navy, and semi-transparent black. All of which resulted in some purple hues. Bonus.

Upon seeing "Mystical Depths" I realized I haven't yet drawn him at an angle that shows much of his underside. This is what came of that.

I wouldn't say it's that he's grown. There's just nothing to really scale him against here besides the rain and such. But as he's sort of leaping "into" the wind here, by the direction of the water spray, it gives him a sense of resistance.

Shinymane1 In reply to grayorca [2012-08-09 23:24:21 +0000 UTC]

I love it!

Yeah, I didn't quite have the courage to draw his belly patterns I can get a bit lazy light that.

Might just be me, I think his pecs look bigger? Yeah you're right, he looks pretty handsome here!
Can't stress enough how much I love him

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

grayorca In reply to Shinymane1 [2012-08-09 23:29:48 +0000 UTC]

^_^

Same here. Once I drew them the first time, I was like, "Eh, I'll draw 'em again someday. But they'll never look as good twice."

It could be the angle they're seen from that makes them seem bigger, or the slight forced perspective. But to me, they're no larger than they were in an older piece like "Futility" [link]

I concur. He does make a handsome, if unconventional orca. That's why I can't seem to stop painting him.

Shinymane1 In reply to grayorca [2012-08-09 23:40:12 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I completely messed up the belly markings on Aquanova on her ref sheet, I'm sure you noticed the ventral view doesn't match her side view

Hmm, he just seems stockier than in 'Haze' which I think I'm comparing to. Now that I see them, I've realized you've really improved on the nose in this one!

I'm not complaining one bit!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

grayorca In reply to Shinymane1 [2012-08-09 23:49:28 +0000 UTC]

Maybe. But I can see it was only an error of placement. The markings are correctly interpreted, just in the wrong place.

Again, it's about the angle. 'Haze' is only a partial view, whereas this is a fully-body piece, with a curved posture. As I've said, he's supposed to be leaner than the average bull - sort of like a cow with broader pectoral fins and a taller dorsal fin - just to lend him that feminine aesthetic his robot form seems to have.

As for the nose, I admit that's not an angle I'm very practiced with. Most of my facial portraits of orcas are side-on, while this is slightly below, as though his face is canted to one side.

Shinymane1 In reply to grayorca [2012-08-09 23:53:05 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I rushed her ref sheet a bit, I don't really like doing them all that much

Ah right

It definitely does look better in this piece, it's something I struggle to get right too, but seeing how you've done it here might help me to draw it better in the future

grayorca In reply to Shinymane1 [2012-08-10 00:14:15 +0000 UTC]

Neither do I. But they are handy to have.

And as with all art, even if you paint the same character multiple times, there's always going to be some deviation from piece to piece.

Thank you. I'm always hoping my art serves as a good example to those who wish to try painting/drawing the same kinds of subjects.

Shinymane1 In reply to grayorca [2012-08-10 00:53:42 +0000 UTC]

Yep

Yeah with Aqua's tooth like mark on her jaw, I've drawn it way too large in one piece compared to others

No problem! It's nice to have every artist here sharing styles and techniques to help others, even if it's involuntary

grayorca In reply to Shinymane1 [2012-08-10 01:18:59 +0000 UTC]

I'd rather share and teach others what I know rather than hog the information to myself. Besides being selfish, there's no fun in that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shinymane1 In reply to grayorca [2012-08-10 01:22:49 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I don't mind sharing what I know either if one asks, I don't tend to make many tutorials though, as I'm not too good at explaining

grayorca In reply to Shinymane1 [2012-08-10 01:32:43 +0000 UTC]

Tutorials are like ref sheets - time consuming, yet useful to have. At least, until one memorizes what is is they're meant to teach.

His design is is beautiful from this angle! The stormy background looks great as well. A sea storm seems to fit in with his personality too ^-^
I don't know what tools your program has, but does it have a "wave" filter? That helps a lot with getting waves to look right, and some brushes of the set you showed me were really good waves too. I think your's looks great though ^-^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

grayorca In reply to AnoOrca [2012-08-09 20:28:24 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. ^_^ Yeah, bipolar guy that he is, he can be anywhere from "flat calm" to "raging torrent" in a matter of seconds.

Most of the water wave tutorials I've looked at are for Photoshop, which has filters that GIMP doesn't. Or if there's anything in GIMP like them, I haven't bothered to look. Brushes just seem like the more involved option to me, as I don't like to let filters take care of everything. Except borders. Ergo, the splashes in this piece are largely blurred, smudged versions of the same set you've mentioned.

In short: I'm more proud of how the lightning strike and clouds turned out than the water did.

Haha xD He and Shark would get along (total sarcasm, lmao)

The whole thing looks awesome to me - I'm not gonna lie, I'm jealous xD I couldn't get a storm scene to look even half that good! You have every right to be proud

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

grayorca In reply to AnoOrca [2012-08-09 20:33:48 +0000 UTC]

Not really. Shark can be a scary customer. SS would probably run away, screaming (as is his nature).

Thank you again. Still, with the amount of wind distorting the splashes, I can't help but feel it's too flat overall. Hopefully my next effort will be even better.
