Description
Gambit
Real Name: Remy LeBeau
First Appearance: Uncanny X-Men #266 (August 1990)
The X-Men first encountered the charming Cajun-born mutant Remy LeBeau during a raid of a Weapon X facility. A professional thief with the mutant ability to transmute an object's potential energy into kinetic energy, he had apparently come to the facility to steal records belonging to Department H for an unknown buyer. It didn't seem like his purpose was any of their concern and they figured it would be the last they'd see of him.
The Weapon X raid had been the young X-Men in training Ana Marie's first field mission, and she had been instantly smitten with Remy, and he seemed to return the favor. Unbeknownst to the school faculty Ana Marie began meeting with him in after hours in the city, where he seemed to make a living scamming people as a street magician. While he wouldn't divulge his previous employer for the Weapon X stunt, Ana Marie felt that he was a good man who just needed some guidance. After many meetings she eventually convinced him to go see Charles Xavier, and after much pleading got the professor to instate him as a probationary X-Men member, call sign "Gambit."

But they'd have to keep a close eye on him. I guess I don't have much else to say other than he's Gambit as you'd know him.
I had some misgivings about how I was going to approach Gambit's design. It was obviously going to be based on his classic look (and really, the only look of his anyone cares about), but I wasn't sure if I wanted it to be like an X-Men uniform or something more casual. I decided to make him dress more casually in my drawing, to sell his kinda vagrant way of life and to kind of set him apart from the X-Men to sell the "should we trust him?" angle. But I tried to work in as many classic cues as I could, down to him wearing a goofy pink vest. He's got a bit of a five o'clock shadow and a bit longer hair than normal to make him seem more devilishly handsome in looks and devil may care in his attitude.
