Charlie-27
First Appearance: Marvel Super-Heroes! #18 (January 1969)
The Jovians were the offshoot of humanity created to live on the moons of Jupiter in the decimated future Vance Astro was transported to. Utilizing mutant genetic material from the lost archives of Nathaniel Essex for gravitational adaptations, the Jovians were capable of altering their incredibly dense bodies' effective surface gravity no matter their location, allowing them to fully take advantage of the wild shifts in newtonian forces in the system in the Jovian system. This resulted in the side effect of high strength and durability, making the Jovians the most effective warriors in the solar system. But with no outside enemies, the warriors were prone to turn on each other, and centuries of in-fighting between the various moons left them ill prepared for the Badoon.
Born on Ganymede, Charlie-27 was one of the last Jovians remaining after the invasion. He was a member of the Jovian home guard, and he had been sent on a diplomatic mission far from his native system of moons at the time of the attack. A skilled warrior and deft strategist, he was an early recruit aboard Geena Drake's Captain America, serving as both the weapons master and the chief of their war table. But feelings of failure for not being there to protect his family and people weighed heavily on Charlie-27's broad shoulders, and he nearly sacrificed himself in a fruitless suicide mission after Drake lost her life in an attack on the Badoon he had strategized. It was only a timely intervention from Vance Astro that convinced him to remain with them to fight another day, an act that led to Charlie-27 naming him as their crew's Major Victory.

The "Guardians of Galileo" was the name of the Jovian home guard Charlie-27 had been a member of at the time of the Badoon attack, and it was where Geena Drake got the name "Guardians of the Galaxy," basically suggesting they were to be the home guard for the milky way. Curiously, this timeline has no history of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" of the mainline universe, the ones who were instrumental in stopping Thanos.
Continuing on from Major Victory and Martinex, here's another classic Guardians of the Galaxy member. Charlie-27 is another "offshoot human" like Martinex, one of the super dense Jovians who lived on Jupiter. I elected to give them more advanced gravity shifting abilities as I wanted them to mostly live on the moons (which is way more reasonable than living on a planet with no land), and there is a lot of surface gravitational difference between the moons and Jupiter itself. Character wise, Charlie is kind of a stock character, he's "the big guy" of the team. He still is that here at heart, but I wanted to put some additional pathos regarding him not being present at the time of the Badoon attack, with some mention of having lost a family as well. I also decided to make his original home guard force the source of the name of the Guardians of the Galaxy in this universe after a fashion--"Galileo" here refers to both the name of his home city in the comics (Galileo City), as well as the "Galilean moons" (that said city gets the name from), which were the largest moons of Jupiter that were discovered by Galileo back in the seventeenth century (just to give you a small history lesson).
But is it really just some weird coincidence that both this timeline and the main one have a team called the Guardians of the Galaxy? Hm...
Charlie is a big dude. The entire conceit of the Jovians is that they are super wide, something that is actually really difficult to draw while still keeping consistent anatomy, which is probably why he is usually just drawn as a really big guy (this is also how he appears in his cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 played by Ving Rhames). But his actual official height is supposed to be just six feet, something I wanted to retain. So I went through great pains to make him squat and wide as I could without it looking like I just stretched a drawing of a normal human horizontally. It took a lot longer than I anticipated. He's also got quite a few designs in the comics, but I think his most recognizable and consistent aspects are a yellow suit and some red crisscross belts across his chest. It took me longer to get the colors right than I anticipated as well, as it's such a flashy combination. I elected to give him a full helmet as well as I figured a being like him so heavily adapted to one specific area of the solar system would want some extra help, maybe an artificial atmosphere or something, I dunno.
