Amazing work, but I sense more bittersweetness than melancholy from this. You can assume a lot of different feelings from simply glancing at a person (or in this case, a subject in a painting). By drawing our attention to the fact that your subject was meant to be "smiling softly", you show that there's some sense of 'joy' that's meant to be found. Although, at a glance, I'd say she looks downright depressed. (Then again, I'm terrible at reading other's thoughts & feelings
