Description Sherlock Holmes. Wit, charm, elegance and maniacal energy punctuated by marvelously timed fits of melodramatics.

Digital painting, CS. (Struggling, struggling to learn... Sigh.) Thanks for looking. As always, very much appreciated.

This brilliant work of art is definitively one of the best and most expressive portraits of Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes here on deviantART that I have seen so far.
Everything about it is absolutely outstanding... The colours, these glowing flecks of light, the shadows, briefly this soft, impressionist overall look you have given it captures the tender atmosphere in the photos wonderfully.
And I think that you managed to represent something else masterfully which is extremely difficult to nail in my opinion... Namely the delicate, ethereal beauty of Brett's features and this particular elegant, sophisticated, charismatic, yet slightly melancholic air that was always surrounding him.

The photos taken of Brett as the retired Sherlock Holmes are for me one of the most marvellous existing of him. It's an inexpressible shame that the film-footage was never released... But at least we have still these magnificent photos and your exquisite painting!
The more I look at it, the more I love it -- you have no idea how much this painting got under my skin...
I wish I could fave this masterpiece of impressionism a billion times (and believe me, this is no exaggeration!).

And what a benefit for the world it would be if there were more Brett-Sherlock Holmes pictures by you, great artist, considering the skills you have...!

Oh, and one statement more: This should hang in the most renowned art museums in the world instead of most of this pseudo-philosophical nonsense called modern 'art'.

Thank you, M'dear. I agree that Brett's interpretation was spot on.
I had the privilege of attending one of his final stage performances in the West End, and
it was there that I could study his movement and facial expressions first-hand. That
may have helped me along with the added emotional layers and some of the depth in the expression perhaps. (Our
seats at the performance were superb...quite close to the stage but not so close as to ruin the soul of the experience.)

Anyway, thank you so much for your lovely comments and sharing. I appreciate all the support and encouragement.

Indeed, yes, Brett's own, often manic personality suited
the role brilliantly.

And re control in Photoshop, not to worry, you will become
comfortable with the programme as you spend time with it. It's
a fantastic, multifaceted tool.

I was looking through my favorites, and found this one, and thought "How kindly he looks!" So I had to pop by again. ^^

Does anyone know, by the way, if there are any Granada episodes of Holmes in the beekeeper garb? I know there was one scene that got cut out, I don't know what episodes, if any, have him tending his little buzzing choir.

Good to hear from you, M'dear.

As to your question, you might try these folks: [link] I do not know them personally,
but they appear to be an active source, are dedicated to Brett's works, and
may be able to point you in the correct direction.

Another contact (via email) may be the fellow here: [link]

Much good luck with the search. "The game is afoot!"

Delicate, beautiful and emotive. My only suggestion would be to make the veil a little clearer; it looks like he's only wearing the hat.

This really is a gorgeous work of art, my dear, thank you for posting it.

Thank you for the lovely and cogent comment.

Indeed, yes, the lack of definition in the veil
has bothered me as well. At one point,
it began to resemble smoke or fog, and I opted
to leave it as it was lest I overwork it. I hope
to correct things as I become more comfortable
with the digital medium.

Thank you again.

GreyMoccasin In reply to LaPurr [2007-08-16 15:36:48 +0000 UTC]

Indeed he was. I was fortunate enough to see the play, The Secret Of Sherlock Holmes, in the West End back in '89. It was
wonderful to experience both Brett and Hardwicke responding to a live audience.

And thank you so very much for the fave for this work. Very appreciated.

Oh my goodness, this is wonderful!

I had the pleasure of meeting Jeremy Brett a number of times, ooh 25or so years ago, because we used to go to the same hairdresser, of all things! He was a witty, charming, intelligent & urbane man and you have captured him perfectly.

You are very kind. High praise indeed from an eyewitness. The fellow did indeed have wonderful features. Angular yet graceful and refined...reminded me a bit of Danny Kaye in some respects. And how lucky that you had the opportunity to meet him in person! I am most envious!

Thank you for the lovely comment and the fave.

GreyMoccasin In reply to bongoshock [2006-04-03 09:13:32 +0000 UTC]

Have indeed done a very recent trial run on both the Painter IX and the slightly lighter version of Essentials 3 and love the Corel programme immensely. It is definitely on my list of must-purchase items, and very soon, I hope. Indeed, the "tool wrangling" I had to do with Photoshop was overwhelming at times.

Thank you for the kind comment and most especially for the programme suggestion. Very much appreciated on all counts.
