Description Where Red Apples Lie - "The unknown girl", page 8/9

<< First < Previous Next >

It's nice to have friends isn't it?

This is one page of nine extracted from somewhere in the story of Where Red Apples Lie, a rather strange graphical novel project I've pondered and doodled with on and off for a long time. I thought it's be interesting to put up a small semi-standalone part of it, maybe even settle on a consistent style along the way.

I'm still finding my footing with the black+white+red style of this work, so you'll probably see some improvement as the pages go by. Comments and feedback is, as usual most appreciated.

I'll try to put up a new page at least every week.

Nice friends indeed. And crude is in that week too, what a bonus! Blond girl's face is very well done, definitely encourages thoughts of punching it, I'm sure the boy is feeling something not-positive towards her at that moment, so considering it's from his perspective that's very well done!

Nice close up of her. Nice coloring and everything, and her iris looks stunning even without color. I don't even care about her hair here.

No idea if you did it on purpose, but her hair lining up so nicely with the window in the panel below pulls the reader down to quickly continue, ha.

And then the girl's face, oh no, combined with the boy's text that is just the most uncomfortable feeling he is projecting right now. Please don't screw up, boy, this seems like your only chance to...I don't know, be accepted by her. That sounds weird.

No, I fully expect he's not too happy about his "friend" at this point. I tried to explain here that he didn't actually had a crush on her (so he wasn't building up his courage to go talk to her or anything like that). As another commenter said, his friend is forcing him out of his daydream most brusquely.

Since this is the first time The Unknown Girl looks at us, I tried to put more emphasis on that - glad her eyes looks ok! The whole situation is of course intended to be uncomfortable for him, she's not really smiling to make it easier on him either.

I didn't actually plan for her hair to line up for the next panel, it was pure coincidence ... ahem. No of course it was all part of the plan, glad you noticed!

What a gorgeous eye... I could stare it for minutes. It's honest, it's peaceful, it's gentle... wow... gorgeous, just like the story so far.

I wanted her eye, now that it's finally directed at us - to be somewhat memorable, so I'm glad you like how it came out!

By the way, allow me a silly question. I remember long time ago, you posting a drawing back in GimpTalk. It was a drawing of a lady siting in the middle of a "pub", drinking from a cup, with daily people happening around her. Was that image anyhow related to this story? (I cannot find it!)

No, it's not a silly question. The image is called Skew World and it's also taken from Where Red Apples Lie albeit at a place and time unrelated to that of this current story. The image is here: [link]

Oooh. Will this be a "practical joke goes wonderfully right" moment, or the start of something awful? *Jaws music plays*

What font are you using for the lettering?

Also, it's stuff like this that keeps tempting me away from the line art and flood-fill standard comic style w/ Celerity. If I kept it black and white, it might be doable.

Thanks, for the entertainment and the inspiration.

The font is a free font simply called "Comic Book". I found it at one of the standard free-font web lists years ago.

No matter how much I've tried to do the "classic" comic book style - monochrome linework and crosshatch-shading, it always ends bad. I find that I really don't like working with total monochrome, I need at least some grayscale shades to feel right about the result. I enjoy reading comics made in those styles (and have plenty of favourite masters too), but I'm too much of a painter to myself get into using those techniques.

Glad you like it, it's great fun to tell a story this way. Only one page to go for this time!

There are some really great fonts on BlamBot.com, too.
