At first glance, I thought this was Aquaman from the 90s; totally badas*.
BTW, I really like your description, it made me laugh.

At the risk of sounding like my 60 year old mother, I think I'm going through the change! Not the hormonally induced menopausal one, but more of an artistic, self analytical, back to basics appraisal of what I like and don't like about my work thus far. As a result there's been lots of dabbling, but few finished results worthy of posting. Certain things about the way I was working etc were starting to make me feel dissatisfied and I haven't been enjoying it as much as I used to, so I decided what the heck, if something's not working for me why not just change things up? WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?!Β

So yeah, I suck lately, but I'm slowly finding my feet again. Hopefully that'll result in something worthwhile soon! I want to fill up my portfolio with the type of work I want to do professionally too (kinda NEED to if the style differs greatly from before as well, otherwise clients are gonna not be buying what it says on the tin!). I figure as I'm hardly overwhelmed in a sea of work right now I'd rather fail at trying to do what I truly want to, rather than 'what I think I'm most likely to get paid doing'!

You know me Grif old chap; I'm a spiritual sort of animal deep down. Social media scares me and I'd rather live in the woods if I had a choice!

Enough about my artsy fartsy BS anyway; How're you getting along with the cintiq? Are you finding the more tactile pen on screen approach an improvement?

Eeesh, it can be so difficult to know where to focus your energy in that kind of situation...Β I wish you well on your journey and hope you find what you're looking for!Β Β
I'm getting on okayish with the cintiq, great for the ol' colouring but I still don't feel totally comfortable sketching stuff from scratch on it. But then, I'm not totally comfortable sketching stuff in general right now. Β Think I need to give a bit more consideration to what I'm doing rather than just endlessly doodling until something half-decent comes out.Β Β

Thanks man, luckily I've become infinitely patient these days.

I used to always struggle starting sketching until my partner came in during one of my particularly burnt out frustrated days and asked what I was trying to draw. Turns out I didn't really know! Now I keep an ideas list on my iPhone's Reminders app that syncs with my mac, as I tend to have my best ideas away from my desk when my mind is free of clutter. Long story short: When it comes to sketching it really helps me to have a goal in mind. I never subscribed to the school of attained vision (i.e., drawing a page of squiggles and finding form in there somewhere which you then elaborate). Everyone's different though obviously!

To be completely fair, as your style is so painterly and dependant on value and form, the underlying sketch probably isn't as important for you anyway. I imagine it's the painting part where the action happens for you! Give it time man, it took me quite a while to get used to it after using an intuos; but I have to say, it's always felt far more natural for me to draw from the pen nib. Hasn't done my posture any favours though, that's for sure!

Yeah I think I need to do that too. I sometimes make a note of things that pop in to my head but they tend to be along the lines of "guy with axe" or "girl with hair" which isn't a huge amount of use a week later
Also need to use reference material before I start working on things rather than always winging it...Β Β
And don't get me started on posture! It's a rapidly growing concern for meΒ Β

EzJedi In reply to griffinator [2016-08-02 10:51:29 +0000 UTC]

I too have to remind myself to use refs! It's literally written on a post-it 2 feet from me now!

Yeah watch the posture thing dude, chronic headaches and pulled muscles is not a fun thing to live with. I've been a lot better with the muscular tension since I got back into running and working out, but I still get headaches a lot. Probably doesn't help that my cintiq is the older lower res 12wx; I can only imagine a higher resolution screen would decrease the strain on my eyes. But if you ever work out how to keep a straight back all day while working, please, let me know! I start out consciously sitting upright, but end the day like the hunchback of Notre Dame crawling out of my office. Occupational hazard I guess.
