I love it. You fooled me when I thought it was a clay sculpture. You took advantage of charcoal in this piece and I like that. That is what I do but curious, how did you start this piece? Did you start on white paper or cover the page with charcoal and extract away?

Started blocking the exct size of the clay sculpture. Then after having the external shape of it, I covered the whole background and removed some of it to give it air with a sponge.

It was the beginning of a long process to achieve the understanding of the necessary tools (info) to create this kind of realism. Now it would never take me that long.

I thought it was a photo at first...and I'm still having a hard time picturing this as a flat sheet of paper.
Excellent job!

I just started with charcoal. How in the hell do you get such smooth shading? I'd imagine it has something to do with the paper - the charcoal paper I use might have too much bite to it.

guaya In reply to omgCAM [2008-03-10 12:05:06 +0000 UTC]
actually i used a very rough paper called roma. I used a brush to spread some of it and cleaned extra dots with a soft eraser. Also, working with hard charcoal and a light hand helps

Thank you! Brush makes sense - I guess that's how you got the grainy, filmish look. Again, I appreciate the info.
