"We're home!" Mazda announced for the group as Ayu allowed her to guide her in, with Dyana following behind.

"Ah, so you've returned," Darque, who was still there, was the first to respond. "You timed that well as I've concluded my business with your father. And I see my favorite maid is unharmed too."

"Th-thank you for your concern, Mistress," Dyana stammered as her face turned red.

"Welcome home, Little Hon, Ayu-chan," Dyne greeted. "How did everything go?"

"It was really fun, Daddy," Mazda responded first.

"We explored around town for a bit and Miss Dyana showed us what it's like to cosplay," Ayu elaborated. "She was Azura, Mazda was Elise, and I was Sakura."

"And we have pictures to show everyone," Mazda finished.

"Hmhmhmhm, so the usual for Dyana when she has free time," Darque mused. "I do hope for your sake the usual didn't happen to her."

"Th-they guarded me well, mistress," Dyana reported. "I-I was at fault for stepping away for a moment."

"Oh?" Darque raised an eyebrow.

"Those V-Twins kidnapped her as bait ," Mazda's voice lowered as she folded her arms. "I goofed and we fell into their trap because I didn't check carefully enough. So they nearly got us too."

"The V-Twins, you say?" Darque scowled. "Seems as though they didn't learn their lesson last time, either."

"Since we didn't get a distress call, you girls obviously made it out on your own, though," Dyne noted. "What ended up happening after that?"

"We can thank Chimu for that one," Ayu answered.

"Chimu~!" The rabbit chirped proudly.

"He figured out the trap ahead of time and killed the lights to catch the V-Twins off guard," Ayu continued. "From there, I believe it was Miss Dyana who saved all of us."

"Oh really now," Darque looked over at her favorite maid. "Even doing such a thing without orders, Dyana? You've been acting independently far more often lately."

"Y-your orders are still my utmost priority, Mistress," Dyana stammered a bit, but her tone carried a sense that she did not regret acting how she did.

"It's still my fault," Mazda lowered her eyes. "I told Aunt Dyana I'd be a good bodyguard and messed up on that. I'm sorry."

"Y-you did very well, Mazda," Dyana assured her. "B-both you and Ayu."

"And I can tell you learned from your mistake, Little Hon," Dyne spoke up again. "I heard an old saying once that you learn more from an F than from an A."

"Thanks, Daddy," Mazda raised her head again, flashing her usual smile. "I'm not going to let any more mistakes get me down, anyway."

"Though it is fortunate for you that you had your sidekick present in this case," Darque commented.

Ayu felt Mazda's body tense up as she folded her arms more tightly and shot a stern look at the villainess.

"Ayu is not my sidekick!" Mazda declared sternly, raising herself to her full height despite being the shortest human in the room.

"Mazda?" Ayu started to ask.

"She's my partner!" Mazda continued proudly. "I've learned a lot from her that no one else could have taught me. She and I have told each other things that we've told no one else. And she's helped me even more than I've helped her. If anything, I could say I'm her sidekick, but we're equals."

"Mazda..." Ayu knew she didn't need to see the smile that appeared on her face to know that it lit up the entire room too.

"Hmhmhmhmhm," Darque snickered as she stepped closer in front of Mazda. "You've got guts to talk back to and stand up to me like that. Normally, I'd do something to humiliate you like I did to your older sister when she roused my ire , but you've impressed me. For now, I'll just say that I'll be watching your up-and-coming career as a heroine with great interest, as we'll no doubt be tangling in that venue in due time. Come, Dyana, it's time we depart."

"Y-yes, Mistress," Dyana responded, but bowed to everyone else in the room before following after Darque as she passed through the door. As soon as it closed all of the way, Ayu threw her arms around Mazda in a tight hug from behind.

"Thank you for saying those nice things about me, Mazda," she exclaimed gleefully. "Hearing all that made me really happy!"

"It's all true," Mazda flashed her winning smile and placed her hands on Ayu's. "Now we have even more to share with Aunt Alondra and Big Sis Sephira."

"Heehee, yep," Ayu giggled.

"You two really are inseparable," Dyne spoke with admiration as he reached over to pat Mazda's head and Ayu's shoulder since Chimu still occupied his usual spot on Ayu's head. "If you ever get into a spat or fight, remember moments like this, okay?"

"You betcha, Daddy," Mazda nodded. "Mommy already told me that she and Aunt Merc have had their share of fights too, but only became even better friends afterwards."

"Are you looking forward to things like that, Mazda?" Ayu teased. "I don't like fights, but I feel better knowing you'll never hate me."

"It's like Mommy said before and also what you reminded me of the other day: Best friends can be wholly honest with each other and tell them what they need to hear."

"Oh, like when I said I refused to believe you weren't the real Mazda the other day? "

"Yep! I really needed that. And when you shared your own story with me, I realized I didn't have time for self-pity when you also needed help and we were in a tough spot."

"I could probably ask for more details on that," Dyne grinned, "but I already know you two aren't going to tell me because it's between the two of you only."

"That's right," both girls answered in unison, before giggling together.

"Well, I'll have to live with that, so long as it's nothing bad where I'd have to step in as a dad. But, knowing you two, it wouldn't be and you'd talk to any one of us in the family if it was."

"('As a dad and anyone in the family,')" Ayu thought to herself, recalling the recent conversation with her mom about her desire to marry that man, causing her to smile again in another way. "(I think I'm starting to get more used to that idea.)"

"For now," Dyne continued, "It's getting late and tomorrow's still a school day, so I'd say it's time for a cute heroine in training and her cute partner to take a bath and get ready for bed."

"Okay, Daddy," Mazda nodded as she repositioned herself to resume as Ayu's guide if needed.

"Thank you again for inviting me to stay here while Mom and Aunt Miriam are out, Mr. Dyne," Ayu said. "After our bath but before we go to bed, will you tell us another story like the one from the other day?"

"As you wish," Dyne responded softly. Hearing the words and the tone behind them made Ayu smile once again as she and Mazda headed in for their bath before readying to call it a night. Ayu also almost didn't realize it herself, but she also soon found herself humming the song that she'd heard from Dyana earlier that evening. Today's adventure may have ended for them, but she happily anticipated what tomorrow's would be.
