I think it's a part of the helm. He is kinda mountain dude, big, strong and angry as a dwarf.

I love your style. There's always some interesting movement going on, something that leads the eye around. A detail about this work I like is that the snow isn't directed at the two figures (which would show some sort of battle in the travel towards something), but rather that the snow comes from behind them, giving it a sense of anticipation of where they will head and what that will be.
