Description
She was always there.
She was there when he had his first fight with Rin. Her soft hand caressed his scalp and patted his back, reassuring him. He remembered her soft voice telling him that it didn’t mattered how many times they fought, they’d always be friends.
She stayed by his side when the redhead left Sano to enter another school. She didn’t say a word back then, her thumb just rubbed circles on his palm, trying to make him feel better. It didn’t work at the time, he didn’t realize how meaningful it was.
[Last] didn’t receive any letters from Matsuoka when he was in Australia, but she accompanied Sousuke when he was reading his. She remained there when his most precious friend left to another continent to follow his dream. He recalled being caught crying by her a couple of times. She didn’t made fun of him, she actually didn’t say anything at all. All she did was lend him her shoulder to cry on it. When the girl left, he remembered feeling a growing void on his chest. He thought it was because of his precious partner. He was wrong.
She had always been there.
When he started swimming on high-school the [h/c] haired would always go to see him. She’d cheer for him and treat him after winning. She would wait for him after practice, she helped him study when he didn’t had enough time to do so. Yamazaki didn’t quite took her presence in account, sometimes being harsh to the point of brushing her off, after everything she had done. When he noticed the discomfort on his shoulder, she was the first one to tell him to get some rest, to stop for a while. But he didn’t listened. He never did.
[Name] went to the hospital with him every single time. From quick check-ups to the times when he really needed to stay for a while. Once he had to stay on the same room for three hours. Seated on the pallet, topless, he thought something among the lines ‘she should’ve gone home already’. But when he left the room with a troubled expression, he spotted her there, reading a magazine, waiting for him as she had always done.
Then why in the world he kept ignoring her?
He didn’t ask when her parents divorced, he didn’t show concern when her grandmother died, he decided not to ask whenever he saw her silently crying. In more than five years, he realized he had never been there for her.
Sousuke came to realize this at the sight of the girl on the floor, [e/c] eyes staring at him in surprise. He had just pushed her.
“I… I told you not to come closer.” No. No. No. That wasn’t what he wanted to say, at all.
“You will never swim again.” She stated matter-of-factly, as if he didn’t know. “Is that what your want?”
“If that means swimming one last time with Rin then yes.”
The female didn’t respond, she just averted her eyes with pained expression. She was clearly suffering, he was the source of her grief, and even knowing that he kept on hurting her. He wanted to apologize, he truly did, but the words didn’t came from his mouth!
“I’ve tried so hard to be everything you need me to be…” Her lips pursed on a thin line. “But it seems like… it’s never enough for you.
“What can I do to make you happy?”
The brunet was taken aback by her question and the sudden meeting of their gazes. Was she really asking him? It had worked, every single time, but he never paid attention to it. He was selfish, his eyes fixed forward, never looking to his side.
She had always been by his side.
“Leaving me be for once would be good.” Ah, Yamazaki couldn’t look at her in this state. He felt like a coward. He reproached a behaviour she never had: [Name] always encouraged him to do everything he wanted.
She stood up,
bowed,
and apologized.
For something she had never done.
Then she left.
[Last] never left his side, for years. She did her best to maintain him happy even on his darkest moments. He was capable of advancing because he knew he wouldn’t be alone if he screwed up. He took her for granted for a long time.
And he didn’t even say thanks.
What was Sousuke without [Name] on his life? They had been together for so long that he wasn’t sure anymore. And to be honest he was quite scared to find out. He kept running, looking for her on the vicinity, but to no avail.
He searched for almost twenty minutes, and upon not finding her, he decided to take a run to her house. After sprinting for another fifteen minutes he reached his destiny, but he didn’t like what he saw. The lights were off, the door locked, so she was still out there, somewhere, and he didn’t know where and when she was coming back.
He was starting to feel anxious.
The girl didn’t picked her phone up, the endless dial tone irking him even more. Feeling agitated, the teen decided to go to a nearby park, guessing he could find her there. Clenching his teeth, the teal-eyed swimmer felt a burning sensation on his throat, her name trapped there, ready to burst out. But what if he found her? He didn’t wanted her to hear him scream.
He almost does when he found her lying down on a bench.
[H/c] tresses falling down onto the ground, her eyes not looking at him even when he was clearly right in front of her. She was leaving him be, just like he asked.
Oh, he felt so stupid at that moment.
“Hey.” He simply said, waiting for her to start the conversation.
“You’re tired, I can hear your heavy breathing. You shouldn’t run with this weather, you’ll catch a cold.” As usual, she put him first.
“You left.” He wanted to facepalm himself. Really now? He practically asked her to! The female didn’t answer, she just looked at him, raising a brow.
“Me? I’d never.” [Name] replied, looking up the sky once again. “I’d love to, but I can’t.”
“Why?” Without noticing, Sousuke approached her. He was now a mere step away from her form. He could notice the soft way her chest rose when she breathed.
“Are you serious?” Once again, the same look. She could make him feel so stupid. At his lack of response, she just sighed. “I like you. And no, not in a platonic way. It’s 100% romantic.”
The butterfly swimmer stared at her, surprised. It did made sense in a way: the reason why even when he acted somewhat like a douche, she never stopped coming back to comfort him. It wasn’t the first time he received a confession, but this time he felt incredibly nervous. Maybe it was the fact that he didn’t wanted to hurt her ―even though he did, constantly―, or the confusion.
“You never said anything.” His heart was beating really fast. Was it because of the jog?
“I thought it was pretty obvious. My bad.”
He was getting annoyed at her lack of communication. He wanted her to speak more, to look at him. To get better and return to his side already.
He discovered he was kind of selfish when it came to her.
Taking the step that separated him from her, Sousuke crouched down to be at her eye-level. She noticed her hesitation about turning her head to him or not. He grimaced when she didn’t.
“Look at me.” He demanded on a severe tone.
“No.”
He was sort of waiting that response, so he placed his large hand on her forehead, and began caressing her scalp with his fingers. It was weird, foreign, but he didn’t disliked the sensation of her skin.
“Why?” His voice softer now, and he noticed her going stiff under his touch.
“Id I look at you once more I’m gonna stop being mad. And I don’t want that. You don’t deserve it.” She explained, closing her eyelids slowly.
“Look at me again.” He came closer, whispering. “Please.”
A chill went down her spine, and she finally did as told. [E/c] met teal, and Sousuke was glad to see his reflection on her pupils. That was how it was supposed to be. He had to be the only one on her sight.
“I have the urge to tie you up and force you to come with me. Wherever I go.”
Now it was her turn to be left dumbfounded. It was true that the brunet was surprised at his choice of words, it almost seemed as if he wanted to posses her, like an object. But reality was that he desired her to follow him willingly, like she had done all those years. He needed her by side to remain strong.
“That was grim.” [Name] giggled, her anger fading away.
He smiled as well, and leaned in to press his lips to her forehead. Was that how a kiss worked? Just… posing his lips there was enough? He couldn’t see her blush, but he could definitely feel the temperature on her face increasing.
“I don’t want you to leave. I’m sorry for never letting you know. I’m thankful for all the times you’ve been there for me―”
She suddenly sit up and almost hits him on the head with her own. He fell on his butt and noticed her face covered by her bangs. [Last] hid her eyes on purpose and Sousuke noticed her lower lip trembling.
“It was about time.” Her voice cracked midway, but he decided not to mention it.
“I feel confident whenever you’re with me. You’re able to make me feel better in no time, and I keep trying to get away. But when I do, I have the sudden urge to come back.
“I don’t know what this is. But if I’m starting to like you, I’d like to know, and do it right.”
She didn’t answer. She just sniffed, and he swore he could see a tear running down her cheek. The girl stood up and offered him her hand, to help him get up. He accepted it and looked down to her, still waiting for a reply.
It was the first time he actually felt like he had done something right.
“Let’s go home. It’s late and you haven’t eaten anything.”
His eyes sparkled, noticing what she meant.
“Yeah. Let’s have dinner together.”
She would always stay by his side. And from now on he’d do his best to do the same.
