Description ... if you can.

Just a digital practice piece, trying some of the brushes and blends in Autodesk SketchBook. I still cannot draw hands to save my life, ugh.

It's a specific brush, set on a low opacity (and probably like two or three layers, 'cuz I go layer crazy xD).

Autodesk SketchBook Pro.

Ah. I've never heard of that one, actually? How good is it?

HaintSoul In reply to Si1verwing [2017-12-10 16:02:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, SketchBook isn't as popular as PS or SAI, but I really like it. It just feels natural, and comes with some cool painterly style brushes and features. There's also a 'flipbook animation' tool, so if I ever felt brave enough to animate something again I can. The only downside is because it isn't as well used, there's no additional brushes or anything to install (the company makes them to give away on their blog, but only for the latest version, and mine is outdated). And there doesn't seem to be a binary function, so I can't pixel or make great graphics either. Other than that I love it!

Si1verwing In reply to HaintSoul [2017-12-11 00:46:43 +0000 UTC]

That sounds cool! Is it expensive?

Pixel art? Ah...is there an anti-aliasing feature you can turn off? Or is that the same thing as binary and I'm a scrub--

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HaintSoul In reply to Si1verwing [2017-12-11 04:19:15 +0000 UTC]

When I bought it a couple years back it wasn't that much more expensive than a new edition Photoshop. The product has changed since I got it, though, now being a yearly service subscription instead of a single-purchase program. But they do offer a free trial too, which is how I first got to know it (came with my tablet).

Oh gosh, this'll show what a neophyte I am but, I'm not too sure how to figure out the anti-aliasing thingy? That's a term that hadn't crossed my mind before, but I'll Google it to see how it might work in SketchBook, if it does. Thanks!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Si1verwing In reply to HaintSoul [2017-12-11 04:36:54 +0000 UTC]

Literally the only thing I know about anti-aliasing is that if it's on, lines look smoother, and if it's off, they look sharper:

I used to have it off so I wouldn't have gaps between the colour and the lineart, but that was because I was a scrub and hadn't yet figured out the 'expand' function on the fill tool.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HaintSoul In reply to Si1verwing [2017-12-15 03:43:13 +0000 UTC]

Ohhhh, is that what it does? Ya learn something new every day. Thank you for the example, too! That really helps, and when it's off it does look pixelated. So perhaps that's similar to just using the binary pencil tool.

You know, I didn't even know there was an expand function on the bucket/fill tool. Honestly, I'm totally lame and manually color in my line art. It takes forever but it's just how I've gotten used to doing digital 'cuz I'm too stupid for computers sometimes eheh.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Si1verwing In reply to HaintSoul [2017-12-15 06:31:15 +0000 UTC]

So far as I know, yeah. XD No idea what they mean by 'aliasing' but that's what it looks like.

Well, there is in FireAlpaca at least. I don't know about other digital art programmes because I've never really used anything else besides MS Paint. If it's not though, it really should be. XD Since I hard-cell shade, I use the fill tool and then do touch-ups by hand. You do more advanced detailing than I do so colouring by hand makes sense.

*snort* I know that feel lmfao

Thank you for the encouragement, my friend! There's actually no background (it's his teleportation powers fading); I've been cheating in that department ever since I figured out how to make a drawing on a transparent layer. My bad, haha. But I truly appreciate your support. You're so kind.

Thank you, sweetpea! I'm really fascinated by the different brushes in Sketchbook, and the smudge ones work so much more effortlessly and realistically than my old Photoshop. It was a lot of fun once I learned where all the settings (and there were quite a few of them) were.

Sindah In reply to HaintSoul [2015-07-09 12:31:42 +0000 UTC]

Sketchbook won't run on my computer, apparently it doesn't like Windows 7. (Which was on it when I got it...)Β  Well, I suppose it sort of runs, but it's laggy as all hell and won't let me sign up for the brushes and stuff. I haven't tried it with the tablet though. I suppose I should. (I've just been informed that there is a full version on the Mac that I could try if I wanted to. Good to know. It's got CS6 and the full Adobe Design Suite on it too. The things people throw away! Maybe after we move... Again. ) I think finding all the settings is what put me off using Painter more often.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HaintSoul In reply to Sindah [2015-07-10 02:17:04 +0000 UTC]

You know, I did have problems getting my digital pen to function properly in Sketchbook; it would lag from tablet to screen, and nothing I tried worked. While researching the problem, I did see a lot of people had not only my same issue, but yours as well. Mine was fixed by going into General Preferences and un-ticking the box under Graphics that says Enable Rotate Canvas. I guess that means I can't rotate anything to work on it, but I haven't tried yet. Maybe that might help you?

I also haven't tried looking for different brushes yet. For one, I'm lazy, but for another, I seem to do okay with just the handful of basics. And Sketchbook is a lot newer than my ancient, fuddy-duddy PS so it has many more basics than I'm used to! It's awesome, actually. XD But yeah, I'm the same way; having to fiddle with so many various settings (flow, opacity on different pressures, size, etc.) is kinda frustrating. If you have it on the Mac though you should totally give it a whirl!

Wait, what? You're moving again?! What happened?!Β Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sindah In reply to HaintSoul [2015-07-20 11:47:03 +0000 UTC]

I'll have to give the Sketchbook thing another try, but I found this too, so that may also be the problem. I know I should fix it right now, but, packing. It sucks and I can't be bothered doing any damn thing. I might give the Mac a try once we've moved.

As for the moving... Well, our rather charming twat of a landlord has given us an illegal eviction notice, and rather than fight it, (which we could, very easily, and win) we thought we'd move and then fight the bastard. He's been hanging around and threatening to take our stuff... He only wanted us to move in and fix all his broken shit for nothing, you know, typical landlord shit. He employed a property manager to do his dirty work, but the property manager took one look at the situation and is on our side. I don't think he'll be managing the property for long though. He told the landlord that 'You are the property owner and I am the landlord!' Put him in his place! When we went out today we passed another property manager heading toward our place. Could have just been a coincidence.

D'ahh, the query must have gotten archived (or the erased) because the link didn't work for me. I'm currently having problems with my Sketchbook again. I thought it was my tablet, but that works fine in PS. It keeps freezing, to the point every couple minutes I need to close the entire program. It's so frustrating, having to stop/start on a drawing. I color primarily in PS, but I need Sketchbook to draw/ink so it's like I'm getting nowhere. Hopefully it decides to start working again, because nothing I try fixes it...

Β Any luck with the Mac or Sketchbook, now that you're moved?

What the what?! An eviction notice! Your last landlord was indeed an ass. I'm so glad you're outta there, but are you still going to fight the eviction? Good luck to you guys with that. Well, somebody sure needs to put that man in his place.

Sindah In reply to HaintSoul [2015-10-07 11:51:34 +0000 UTC]

I think the link was to something about Sketchbook having a problem with Wacom drivers, but I honestly can't remember now. It might explain why you're having problems with your tablet, but I did a search for it on the Sketchbook help page and it came back with nothing. I think it said if you un-install the Wacom driver, run Sketchbook and re-install the driver whilst Sketchbook is running it will work, but I just don't quite remember... I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try it... Inking is a pain in PS. I've seen several time-lapses of people doing it and it looks simple, but I just can't figure it out. I know it has something to do with the Pen Tool and Pathways, but I have no idea beyond that.

I haven't had time to play with Sketchbook and Owen is always on the Mac for business. I've had other crafty things to play with and I decided to ruin a new sketchbook instead, hence the pictures of Lexi's bum parked firmly on something I'm trying to draw!

Yes... Our old landlord was indeed a Prince among men. We are still having problems with him, but no mediation date until December...
