Description I took part in my school's graffiti art competition with ~ectomania , Wei Qi and Bernard. And this is the completed piece, we had 2 hours to work on it, excluding preparation done beforehand. Time was extended for to around 2 and a 1/2 hours for all 5 teams.

And yes, we won! 20 movie passes.
It was the 1st time any of us (wei qi had prior experience on a smaller scale) had worked with spray paint and on such a large scale, 2 m x 1m.

Did we do everything we wanted to do?
probably not, there was more to be done and more we could do, time was really a constraint.
Are we proud of what we did?
Hell yeah, pretty much!

And I would want to remember it down the road, so let me write what we did before I forget it all...
Ectomania and Wei Qi worked on the concept before I joined in, the concepts were all pretty lame though... The theme was graffire, and many teams took it upon themselves to intepret it as a fused word of Graffiti and fire, from my understanding, there is a italian word "graffiare" which means to inscribe upon. Probably the organisers didnt know about that either, so we stuck to the fire thing.
Bernard and Wei Qi worked on the stenciling of the riot police and the car and our Prof Jeff (thanks!) allowed us to use the laser cutter machine. Took Bernard and Wei Qi quite some time to work on those vectoring.
Me and Ecto aka Kader worked on the main guy and the background. We had a test run, which went wrong pretty badly, but we were glad to have done that, because of all the mistakes we made because of it.

On the day itself we arrived and dropped down our bags, literally bags of stuff. We had like 20 spray cans, masks and even hairdryers that came with 30 m of wire extension (thanks to my dad for helping me with the wire).

I sketched out the pic using graphite, using corrugated plastic and mounting board, Wei Qi and Kader masked the areas and painted the sky ray by ray. Wei qi laid down the bronze on the top part of the lower portion of the background. After that, I worked on the bottom edge of the background. The other 2 dudes continued working on the sky while i did the lower background. I went around fixing any mistakes on the skies and later on, on the buildings themselves.

So where was Bernard? he came later on 1 hour plus into the contest, he was busy preparing the stencils, we had 3 layers but he made only 2, because the machine is oh so slow. There was supposed to be a 3rd layer of extreme glare/white highlights on the police though. we celebrated the coming of Bernard by putting him straight to work, heh.

I continued to help dry things out and iron out any errors, before moving on to the freehand the main guy in. He's preparing to fight the police with his trusty spray can and lighter . Bernard, Wei Qi and Kader then painted in the police while i worked on the main dude, like 2 times over because they kept overlapping with the spraying over the main character. And because everything was a blur and time was running out, by the time i redrew part of the main character, I had horribly disproportionized (is there even such a word?) him. Forgive me, my friends!

At this point, the 2nd layer of stencils were being used, I took the chance to salvage the main character and masked in those creases and darken the edges. The fire was painted in acrylic.

And we managed to complete it... at least it looked complete.
So the contest was over and we pretty much thought to ourselves, "this was it and we did our best" As cliche as it sounds, we really did not expect to win. We sat on the floor and I turned to Wei Qi, shook his hand and said "hey man we did our best" and got a nod and a "yeah" in return.

We were pretty surprised at winning though, and we were given some time to fix up some of the aspects of the painting like the hair and mainly the main dude. So why did we win? I have no idea, probably because we used spray paint the most and destroy a few hectares of environment with all the aerosol we released? We should have stenciled him too, damn. But the police stencils were awesome.

Would we fix it now after contest now? Probably not. It is a physical record of the efforts and time we spent on it. Every look at it replays scenes on our minds.

We'll do better next time

I promise.

Hehe, graffiti competitions eh! It's been a long time since I seen your art (or yours and others' combined effort anyways).. And I like it! You deserve the win.
