The lineart style (along with the Mercury/Gemini era suit), and colors...not to mention traditional media, would have made me think this was artwork from a 1950s or very early 1960s book, if I didn't know it was modern.  Think of the illustrations for 50s/60s kids' books and you'll see what I mean.  Just for the retro awesomeness, I have to fave.  (Curious, were you aiming for retro? )

It does seem a bit retro now that I stand back and look at it.  To answer your questions, no I did not intend for it to be retro, but I kinda like it that way.

Sometimes art just seems to take on a life of its own!

First of all I think it would be better if you post a larger resolution of the drawing (if you have any), because this way it's hard to judge because the details are not clear. I can tell though, you've done the astronaut part intricately with the solid outlines, and the proportion seems generally correct, good job. You've done well too with the loose watercolor technique on the space.

A few suggestions for improvement:

. The stars still look unrealistic with almost the same size spread on the paper, I suggest to do the splatter technique instead of painting them one by one, try this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCe4KA…

. If you could add darker color on the space I think the painting would express more sense of depth. This does require layer by layer washing so prepare a proper watercolor paper.

Other than that this simple drawing is already interesting, with a bit improvement on technique, the space scene would look more realistic.

Hi...might seem like a weird comment here but while I think all of this would be great feedback for a future work, I'm getting a neat little retro vibe from this.  Think book cover from the late 50s/early 60s...maybe the prevalent techniques were different back then and this got closer to that older approach...?

I'm not familiar with retro era, so I just gave the feedback based on the common style.  So I suppose you might be right, one painting could be already perfect as it is in a particular context.

LOL, what can I say...I’m old. Not quite from the 50s/60s, but when I was little, a lot of that stuff was only 30 years old or so. And space geek that I am, the resemblance to space suits from that time period only jumped or to me more.

Ah now that's much clearer. I suggest you do this with all your art. If you're afraid of your work being stolen you can add Deviant Art or your own watermark on it.

That's a great idea.  But I don't have any knowledge on how to do that? How exactly would you make a watermark?

SlytherclawPadawan In reply to HalloRedBoots [2018-01-07 14:19:06 +0000 UTC]

You need an image editor like Photoshop. Or you can always use DA default every time you submit your work - there's the button to choose: "add watermark" if I remember it right.

Oh, and thanks for the watch. You may leave anytime though if my 'coffee' is too bitter for you later, often times I'm intense like that.

Hi! I see that you've requested critique on this piece, and I'm here to give you one

Your watercolor is so beautiful ! I love the contrast between the black and white astronaut, and the vast array of colors in the space around them; it gives me the impression that they are awed by the splendor of their surroundings.

I'd really love to see more of the details in your piece, so I suggest that you include the option to zoom in more - the photo as it is now is really tiny! Additionally, if possible, I suggest you take the photo from an angle where the edges of the paper will look straight - because of the shape of the paper, when I first saw this piece, I thought that it was an artisan craft, perhaps a pillow xD.

Hope this helps, and keep up the wonderful work!

Although it WOULD make a cute pillow...would totally go with a 1950s/60s quilt I have that has some adorable vintage space fabric that I would guess came from the 1950s or 60s.

Thank you for the comment!!!! I do agree with it being small and the picture not being the best quality.  The galaxy took so much water that's why it's looks like a pillow because the corners turned in.  I'll try to get better quality photo next time!  Thank you!!!
