Description Yeah, so........ this is different for me.

I don't really know WHY I drew this - I just started with the facial form, and suddenly the nose was turning into a tree and it just went on from there.

It took me a long time to do this one - much longer than it should have. I got hung up with trying to figure out how to draw water, and then the neck area had me "stumped" for a while.

I'm glad to finally call it done.

I don't know if I believe in Global Warming, but I do believe that we are hurting our mother. There is no way we can pollute and destruct as much as we do without there being some sort of consequences somewhere down the line.

Mother Earth is Screaming, and yet we continue to do what we do.

Thanks for looking! I know that pencil doesn't scan well, so it looks a bit spotty. Also the left side looks blurry because I was scanning from a coil bound book. I like coil books - but they suck for scanning.

I really used this project to get comfortable with having darker darks - I tend to be a bit light handed and afraid of using too much shadow. This was a good exercise for that.

8X10 graphite on paper

When I saw this for the first time I said "Dear God" and began to cry. This picture is so true that it create the pain inside the person who see it. It is so great I hope that other people will see it and realized how much we need to help mother Earth.
I have a felling that mother was whispering to you what to draw. You are really talented. But this is not just an art peace this is the mirror of the truth.

You put so much emotion into this piece of art! You may have started out not knowing what the end result would be, but I think you were channeling subconscious thoughts and emotions. This is a wonderful piece; you portrayed Mother Earth's suffering perfectly. From the recent events, it seems as if she is finally retaliating! Or... Committing mass genocide. :-p

Thank you so much! You have "seen" exactly what I felt, and hoped others would feel when they saw it. It seems as though she's getting angry and has had enough, doesn't it?

Who knows what the future will bring - but one thing is sure - Mother Earth will be in charge of it

Handra, I see you have gone for the political jugular with this piece on ecological issues. It's a very powerful statement and the message is abundantly clear.

The textures are interesting and varied, the whole idea is very surreal. The pencil work is nice, it's good to see you using true black. I would of liked to see more darker tones in the lower layers of the image perhaps, but that's just me.

I do like the image, but I will be honest with you, that's my job after all. It's the composition. It feels crammed into the space. Where the natural disasters and smog occur, they feel confined by the papers edge. Otherwise it's a truly engaging piece of art.

It's good to see you pick up some graphite.

Ahhh Fladam - my honest friend!

You got me - I secretly knew in my heart that this drawing was too big for the page but you see I was helpless to avoid it, because when I started drawing it, I didn't know that I was going to be adding all that crazy stuff to it! It just kind of came as I went along.

I do have a habit though, of not being able to make my drawing fit my paper size properly, and so I guess that is something I need to work harder on!

I also wondered if I should have made the neck area a little darker, but to be honest with you, it took me so long to just get through this piece, by the time I got to the very bottom I had run out of ideas and it was a real struggle to figure out what to do down there. Once the idea hit me, I just wanted to get the damn thing finished! LOL!

I'm glad that you like the over all idea and that you see improvement in using darker tones in the drawing.

Thank you for the honest opinions my friend! It felt good to pick my pencil up again!

Thanks sweety, I do like it when you doodle Handra. I know you don't tend to think through your pics, you just tend to start and see where you end up. I believe we may of had this discussion before about paper edge restrictions some time ago. All I would say is draw on bigger paper when you feel the creative urge, but that's not really good advice because this picture flowed from somewhere inside, which was beyond your control. I do understand that.

There's no right or wrong answer really. Art is as much about spontaneity as it is about pre planning. Your image took the path it took, and the journey for you was hopefully fun and fulfilling.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter what I prattle on about, I'm just an old fart with grey whiskers. I do love the stuff that you do, and it's an honour to be your friend and that you allow me to be so critical.

I think you're right - we did have this discussion once before I think!

You're not an old fart!! how could you be when you are still in University??!! You're still a pup!!!

thanks again Fladam - I'll keep your thoughts in mind!

Handie In reply to jacksl [2009-12-31 20:02:21 +0000 UTC]

Neither did I! LOL! I enjoyed it, because I found a certain amount of freedom in it - I could make things look wacky, or not exactly realistic because this medium is more flexible than say a portrait or a scene.

I SHOULD be spending more time drawing.... but I just have so little motivation these days

thank you Jackie! I know this one will not be a big fav maker amongst my watchers who mostly watch me for photos, but I enjoyed working on it and I'm happy with how it came out.
