Description Pliosaur, done in Sculpey. He's done! Woohoo!

The base was done in Sculpey too. It definitely added a lot to the piece...

Yeah I wanted to make him cartoony/realistic at the same time. The base was a lot of fun to make. Thanks!

I really like this. You managed to capture the actual anatomy while giving it an anthropomorphic edge that fits just right.

Thanks! It's my favorite piece so far. I can't seem to top it!
That's kind of my aim--to make my prehistoric guys just sort of 'fence sit' between realism and 'cartoony'. Most folks seem to either go for one or the other--either scientifically accurate or the other end of the spectrum, way too cutesy. I like to balance it out.

It's a great balance, and you accomplish it very smoothly.

Amazing. x) Much better than mine. Damn your skills. I need to work with Sculpey sometime.

Well, you kick my ass at pencil/charcoal drawings...so we're even!

It took a lot of practice to hone the sculpey skills. Stuff can be tricky to work with! The great thing about it is you can sand & carve around on it once it's baked...

This is FANTASTIC!!! You've improved so much from your other pieces! I'm so impressed!

I had a question for you -- I especially like the way you did the base. How did you do the texturing of it -- especially on the shrimp? I was wondering if you used a special tool for that.

This is brilliant. Bravo!

hankinstein In reply to Atellix [2006-11-29 18:43:53 +0000 UTC]

The texture on the base was done with dental tools. My favorite tool has a little roundish thing on the end that's flat on one side (kind of hard to explain--maybe I'll just take a picture of it to show you). I used it to make the little "dents" in the base and the grooves on the ammonite's shell.

Dental tools are the BEST for working with Sculpey.

All the details.
And the wholecomposition fits so well.
I love the facial expression, too
How came that idea up?

hankinstein In reply to Summatrah [2006-11-21 15:27:31 +0000 UTC]

I just really wanted to do a pliosaur. I had done a lot of mammals and decided to do something reptilian. I was looking at some sculptures in a Prehistoric Times magazine by a sculptor (whose name escapes me at this moment) that sculpted the sea reptiles from Rudolph Zallinger's World We Live in Mural. The sculptor had the swimming reptiles mounted on bases like my pliosaur. I really liked that concept, but decided to take it a little further and put some stuff on the base (ammonites and fossily-looking stuff).

Thanks for the compliments!
