Why not come up with a better theory than regurgitate a cliche, paint it with a new coat to match whatever show/movie people can't take, "Alternate Universe" and/or, "It's Fiction" as an answer to fictional movie/show rules? Or better yet, leave it be.
If you want a better answer, Moana is based around Mythological stories in a universe where these stories are real

The Sun/Moon player character's shirt, pants and hair are intentional, since I thought they'd fit the tropical theme as an easter egg, but the black dress is just a generic black dress.

That would be because it is from Sun and Moon. as is one of the hair styles, pair of shoes, shorts, and I think one of the capris. Then again the capris are super generic both in game and irl.
