Description Berlin - Germany

After visiting this zoo (Berlin's),and looking at this old female gorilla's sorrowful look ,I think these will probably be the last photographs of animals in a zoo by me...
I know that many may have a different opinion but i can't change my mind ...

I have been fortunate enough to see gorillas in the wild when on a hike through the rainforest in Rwanda but my guide wouldn't let me take a photo unless I coughed up $500 which is what tourists normally pay to see them. Which is fair enough as much of that money would go to protecting these magnificent creatures. I came across two juveniles and the sense of gentleness they project is something that money can not buy. Personally, I am not a fan of zoos but if it can make someone like yourself form a deep connection with these wonderful animals, it has served its purpose. Gorillas, like all intelligent creatures, belong in the wild. And you're photo brings that point of view across brilliantly.

This isn't a look of sadness. That is a human projection based on the look displayed according to a human perspective.
We do it a lot as humans, and we are so wrong to do so. For instance, a downturned mouth in primates does not display sadness, but rather it denotes relaxed facial muscles, indicating a relaxed, satisfied animal, not sadness as it does in humans. Baring teeth in a lot of primates does not indicate aggression, as most humans believe (because it would indicate that in humans) but it is a greeting in most cases.
We really need to take the time to understand what animal expressions mean before we start judging institutions such as zoos on their animal welfare, based on anthropomorphic assumptions.

Congratulations, Haris, the DD is well deserved!

This is a very emotive portrait of Fatou. Her zoo keeper died some month ago (he had looked after her for about 40 years) and he was the only human being she tolerated close by.

She is one of the oldest gorillas worldwide (born in 1957)...

I so agree... Zoo's are better than they used to be. The people responsible for the animals try to create natural surroundings. I have seen people have that same look in their eyes... Disconcerting. As far as the technical aspects of this wonderful image. The tones and crispness are spot on. The angle of the head and where you cropped the image is perfect. It deserves to have a DD. Congratulations.

Do you think that a primate cares if it has vines to swing on, or ropes? Isn't it simply important that it can swing and display natural behaviour?
Natural behaviour is the most important aspect of captive animal enrichment.

All this anti-zoo sentiment is pathetic, I'm sorry. The truth is, you DONT KNOW what an animal is thinking, or even how it thinks. All the people here saying the gorilla is "sad" are leting appearances fool them. At zoos, people often tell the staff that their apes look "sad", but this is simply their neutral expression. If you want to know how an animal is feeling, observe its behavior, not just its expression.

Animals in zoos visibly suffer when in bad conditions, they pace, rock back and forth, chew or pick constantly at wounds, and are anti-social. They dont just put on a pouty face and wait for some sap to take a picture. Also, primates dislike cameras because the lens resembles an eye, staring at them, maybe you should use your brain instead of your emotions, next time.

My point is, zoos make a huge contribution to conservation, awareness, and education. Without zoos, there would probably NOT BE any gorillas left to look at. I think it's cheap and underhanded to just fob off zoos as "prisons for animals", when most of them do a darn good job. I won't deny that badly run or badly constructed zoos or all circuses are bad.

I just get tired of all these PETA sounding blowhards going "d'aaaaaaw, look at the sad animal, zoos are the mafia of the animal world, baaaaaw", when most of them just like causing a fuss and being inflammatory, without doing their homework.

And I dont give a flying fuck how many of those blowhards flame this comment, I'm sick of being insulted just because I defend good zoos and the work they do.

Couldn't agree more. Personally I don't really like them BUT I support them via charity donations and I make sure my kids go, they are very important places that do some incredible work. Sure it would be great to get rid of zoos and send all the animals home but we're screwing up their natural homes and they'd be dead or in severe danger within months so we need zoo's, parks and sanctuary's more than ever before to ensure we don't lose the creatures forever, that would be far worse than a few sad faces.

As usual it's the worst cases we always hear about, like the news. We only hear about the murders and the crime, we never hear about Mrs Smith gave her whole weekend to ensure a family who had lost everything, got back on their feet again. Same with zoo's, we only hear about the worse ones where the animals are suffering, we never hear about the fantastic ones that do some of the pioneering work to preserve species in danger.

When I see a picture like this I want people to think that these animals are not to be gawped at, pointed at and laughed at, I want these pictures to make sure people give money or time to ensure these creatures are well cared for and understood in save environements, if we can just achieve that it would make all the difference.

I agree that well-run zoos do they best they can to preserve and enrich the animals they take care of, and are vital to conservation and awareness efforts. I am very happy that we have those zoos that espouse the utmost care and attempt at understanding these animals. Your statement of "without zoos, there would probably NOT BE any gorillas left to look at" is one I agree with greatly. Thank you for contributing your perspective on all of this!
