I finished reading Steven Erikson's Deadhouse Gates a few weeks ago, and I have been working on this since then, as a way to catalyse my feelings... The Malazan universe is so dark that every spark of compassion shines like a 2.21 gigawatt lighthouse (yup, I'm good with metaphors), and when it is inevitably destroyed, it breaks my heart. Of course, Icarium (greenish dude) and Mappo (bulky dude) won the first prizes in the categories "impossible friendship", "crushing Earlinwe's feelings" and "amnesia, LOL".

C'est mon univers de fantasy préféré du moment ^^ Pour décrire Malazan, je dirais que c'est quelque part entre Dune de Frank Herbert (pour la psychologie complexe des personnages), Le Seigneur des Anneaux (pour l'immensité de l'univers, et ce mélange d'héroïsme grandiose et de vie quotidienne) et... Les Misérables (pour le pathos et le réalisme). C'est un univers très sombre, où les mortels ne sont souvent que les pions d'un jeu cruel auquel jouent les dieux... Mais j'adore !

I only just finished the entire series a couple months back, probably one of the most immersive worlds I've ever encountered.

I've only read the first two books this far, and I'm hooked... I love how the author hints at the amazing scale of this world, and how deeply he can make me empathize with characters I've only met a few lines ago (remember Pearl, from Gardens of the Moon? ^^)

Not not really, I read that book like four years and he's got upward of a hundred characters. Have you met Annomander Rake or Caladan brood yet? Probably the two most boss characters in the universe.

Pearl is a demon that Quick Ben summons to cover his escape from Anomander Rake, he stays alive for about 1mn... But in that minute, he manages to make you understand that demons have feelings, too.
And yes, Rake is pretty badass
