Description
Two men in a parked car passing time. While in itself a fine image, the story behind this is a far more interesting detail from the 1960s inner city era.
You have heard about underground cabs, unlicensed vehicles who will drive you around the cities for a fee. This is similar, but this is an underground bar, where you stop by sit and buy a drink. If you look closely you will see liquor bottles on the floor of the front seat.
Part of my Sycamore St. Hill series, 1969.
Taken with a Nikon F, with a 50mm F2.0 Nikkor, on Kodak Plus X film.
Feel free to download, just give me photo credit.

This is real photojournalism - capturing the vibe of a place and time.
You may not have a New York Times Lens blog feature yet, but these sorts of images are quite up there with those fascinating insights into little corners of our very varied lives.

That is just awesome, from a time when you were allowed to have alcohol in your car.

Your reference to underground cabs made me think of a word that hasn't crossed my mind in many decades: jitney! Thanks for the memory. Love your photography. It's very powerful.

sometimes the best paper is what you have, like brown paper from a grocery bag or from the packing in a box, with wrinkles or ironed.

I saw this once before in a different part of the inner city, otherwise I never would have known.
