Description
Snowtide rockslide
By: Autumn Fjeldberg
It was just an average day when it happened. The Sun was shining down, warming the cold, snowy world below. There was not a cloud in the sky. It was a perfect day… for a disaster, but I'll take you back to where things started going wrong. We were all on a field trip…
"I don't know" I whimpered hesitantly, as we continued to climb Snowtide Mountain. Every since we got to the tall Mountain on a field trip, I've had this weird feeling deep in the pit of my stomach. Something bad was going to happen, something very bad. I tried to tell my classmates that we need to turn back, but no one would listen. Not even our teacher, Luna, or my best friend, Night, would listen.
"Akela, you're probably just afraid of heights, stop worrying and just have fun!" Night barked with enthusiasm in her voice, as she ran ahead to the front of the group.
"Maybe she's right" I thought, running after her "Maybe I am just afraid of heights."
"Wow! It's beautiful!" The light footed cat, Alice, mewed excitedly when we reached the top. The rest of the class started gathering at the peak of the snowy mountain, looking down at the amazing view of Snowtide River, the large, cold river that flowed down the high mountain. Everyone seemed to be enjoying them self's, everyone except me. The weird feeling I had early never went away, but in fact got worse as we went higher. As a result of the feeling I was crouched down on the cold unforgiving ground in fear. Just when I thought I couldn't take the pain anymore it stopped, but not without a price. Moments after the ceasing of my pain a heart stopping crack echoed around the mountain. Following the crack were screams, terrifying screams, coming from behind me. I whipped around to see a chunk of the cliff gone and half of the class too!
The lucky few who didn't fall were nearly paralyzed with fear and shock. I ran to the side of the cliff and looked down, my eyes round with worry. What I saw was like nothing I've ever seen before. Most of the victims had managed to get a grip on the treacherous loose dirt and climb to the safe solid ground on the side. Others had already made back to the top of the mangled Cliffside, but I didn't care about them. My attention was focused on the one wolf that had not made it to safety yet. Luna. Our beloved teacher had a mangled leg which was making it an impossible struggle to get a solid grip on the slick slope. Closer and closer she slid towards the awaiting icy claws of the once peaceful river. If she fell into that river there was a twenty percent chance she would make it out alive and I wasn't about to take that chance. Without any second thoughts I jumped down the cliff after her.
Ignoring the protesting wails from my classmates above I cautiously made my way down to Luna. I was only a couple feet away from her and the river! I couldn't go any closer without almost falling in myself. So I swished my long, wolfen tail, to my side as far as it could go.
"Grab my tail!' I yelped, as my feet started slipping from underneath me.
"No!" She said, with pain in her voice. "I pull you down too…"
I opened my mouth to speak but I was interrupted as the dirt underneath her gave way. I stood there, paralyzed, as I watched her slide down into the water. Her scream cut through the air when the frigid water hit her. It was happening. My mentor…My teacher…My friend… was being sucked up by death right in front of my wide eyes, and there was nothing I could do about it…Or was there?
"NO!!" I screamed, and dove in after her.
"I will never let go…Never."
