Volatilus winced, drawing James behind him as he shakily tried to get to his feet. Lien smiled, blood dripping from her white teeth and muzzle, reflecting the red hue in her eyes.

“Don’t you touch him!”

Landing square between the two dragons with a furious shriek, Temeraire immediately reared back on his hindquarters and hissed viciously at the white Celestial, his ink-black wings bursting up in a threatening fan. Lien shrunk back a step, snapping her jaws at him.

Laurence could feel his blood boil with anger as Temeraire swiped at Lien’s face – at her wicked, wicked snarl, at her jaws painted with Volly's blood. How dare she attack a defenseless courier!

Temeraire’s black tail whipped around like a serpentine entity, forcing her several more steps back, away from the injured Greyling. Laurence chanced a spare glance behind them; Volatilus bled profusely onto the sand, struggling to remain on his feet as he kept James hidden behind him.

“Come on Volly,” he could hear James coaxing gently as the Greyling collapsed onto the cold beach. “Come now, stay with me.”

Lien cackled - a cold, malicious sound.

Temeraire lunged.

I have no excuses.
