Use a tripod, if you are shooting in daylight; you should use ND filters to get less light, wich means you will be able to take longer exposures of the water!
And just have fun experimenting

WOW. At first I thought this was photo-manip/digital art because of the water. I don't have experience with long exposure, so I was surprised to learn this was a photo. Great shot!! The water actually looks like a smooth blanket trailing along the rocks and trees. Beautiful!!

When I can finally invest in a good camera, with the ability to manually alter my settings/focus etc...I will be sure to experiment with long exposure! It definitely looks cool!
