Description Dr. Paul Kurtz
2007
Oil On Canvas

Private Collection, Williamsville, NY, U.S.A.

This painting was commissioned by Dr. Kurtz, a huge influence in the secular humanist movement today....I believe it is going to hang in the Center For Inquiry in Amherst, NY.

definately sense the change from your poetic/mellow atmospheric style to a look of reality like snap shot moment.. so flexible.. i love it

Great painting! You definitely have talent. I love how the features in the picture are firm but soft-natured... if that makes sense.
I'm actually in the process of reading his book "In Defense of Secular Humanism," and I finished reading the Humanist Manifestoes a little while back. I agree--he is a very bright man, and I hope to be able to set up a short interview with him in the near future.

I dig on Kurtz, and your work very much.
I too would love to paint portraits of 'enlightened' people.

I love it, also a big fan of the man himself. If you get any better though I don't think I'll have any respect left for my own rather lazy approach to art. How many hours a day do you paint? I can barely find time to brush my teeth.

HeatherHorton In reply to zamfir [2007-09-23 03:26:55 +0000 UTC]

Not as much as you'd think...I aim for 5 hours a day...though it's usually more like 4 or so with some other work on website or whatnot...some days it's 6 though...

Well, that's not bad... And you are apparently quite productive in the time you've got.

I hear Lucien Freud paints 8 or more hours a day religiously. Wish I had that kind of time.

Outstanting piece! Its very powerful yet not as rigid as it could be. I enjoy getting your art in my deviation box, its so inspiring.

Wonderful portrait! I like that he looks relaxed and approachable, and as always your technique is beautiful.

And thanks for giving me a reason to look him up, it was an interesting read

you've captured his "doctorness" (for lack of a better word) very well... in that he looks knowledgeable as well as kind.

Very classic. Quite National Portrait Gallery (London).

From a photo you took yourself or one provided by those who commissioned the piece?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

HeatherHorton In reply to paintedangel [2007-09-21 15:32:38 +0000 UTC]

He gave me free reign to take photos as I liked. I liked his informal nature and thus the painting is pretty informal, yet with a hint of academia in the background.
