Polyphylla decemlineata, the Ten-Lined June Beetle

I painted this directly from a specimen that I have in my insect collection. I found it dead and floating in the water while I was doofing around in a sort of marshy creek by my house. So I fished it out and put it in my glasses case and happily wandered off to the library. After a while in the library, I decided to head home and opened the glasses case to get my sunglasses. The case started chittering and buzzing and I definitely jerked back ad yelped, to the surprise of the other library patrons. Apparently Mr. Beetle wasn't dead, just cold and waterlogged. He warmed up while I was in the library and revived. Unfortunately, he was worse for the wear after his sojourn in the creek and died the next day So now he resides in my collection.

Anyway, here he (definitely a he, btw - you can tell by the big antennae) is, in all his glory.

I love all the little details - hairs on abdomen, spots on upper wings. You've done great work. And I like antennas.

But I think background is little bit too dark - so whole painting looks too dark. Maybe try lighter background, with some old paper tehture?

This is gorgeous! I would love to see the progression of this piece from start to finish.

Lovely work. Really crisp and clean. It has that old periodical journal look to it.
