Description Here I go again with one of my entries to the cgtalk Anatomy Lesson Series. This is a copy of David d'Angers' plaster bust entitled 'Sorrow'. This was done in painter with charcoal. The background was painted with acrylics. Here is the original, if you wish to see it [link] .

Normally, facial expressions don't affect me, but the colors really nail the feeling. The 'evening' color scheme makes it look even more than human, particularly with the greyish background.

You've captured both the texture of the original and the expression of the original model (assuming there was one.) It's an exquisite piece. Just excellent.

What I can't believe is that you can draw this level of quality with painter. I can do extremely expressive drawing in painter, but anything of this precision requires mechanical pencils and continental drift time frames.

I am in awe.

Lol, DougQ, I love your analogies! I wasn't anywhere close to this good with Painter until I participated in cgtalk's Anatomy Lesson Series Part One: The Head. It was draw 50 heads in 30 days (I only managed around 23). The heads were provided from master works. There was something about working from master works, trying to get so much done so fast, and being around so much talent and enthusiasm that really made things click for me (and everyone else who stuck with it). This picture was one of my 23 heads. I think it took a couple of days. By the way, by the end of the month, the the thread was about 70 pages long, so many people participated.

that is sorrow, yes
great technique there.
I'm a bit bothered by the lump on his forehand from a realistic point of view, but from an artistic POV i appreciate it greatly.
i must say, wow!

wow viki , love the warm colours used but they dont really represent sorrow in my eyes.

Helen-Baq In reply to BigLew [2006-07-18 02:00:16 +0000 UTC]

I thought about that, BigLew. I suppose the reason I chose those colors is the plaster cast is somewhat orange-ish. Once I get through this Anatomy lesson, I will probably go back and experiment. Thank the stars for layers!

The picture actually looks more sorrowful than the sculpture. Or maybe the look of sorrow is slightly different, it kinda looks like more of a frantic sorrow while the sculpture is a more serene kind of sorrow. It really caught my eye when I was browsing the deviations, it looks great.

wow, increadible! i really like the warm colors you used, they really make the lifeless plaster cast come to life. i always see them in only charcoal or something.....

Really impressive and captivating. Great realism, maybe blend the line on the right side of the nose to look more like a shadow since the human body doesn't actually have lines.

The colour of the piece is remarkable too.
