Description "Those who find beautiful meanings in beautiful things are the cultivated. For these there is hope.
Those who find ugly meanings in beautiful things are corrupt without being charming. This is a fault." - Prologue.

Personally, I think this is what art is all about.

Drawing based on "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde.
I think that, far from being a matter of morals, Dorian's damnation was based on aesthetic principles. He did, after all, destroy the beautiful things given to him, like Sybil and Basil's love. Beauty has always been so rightfully represented by roses; Dorian's youth was a mockery of this, his soul being corrupted by his misconception of beauty. Hence the rose and the mask.
The prologue of this book is so full of win, it kind of became my bible. Ach, well. Nineteenth century is epic, after all.

Charcoal on paper, December 2011.

Hope you like.

Ah! I agree. I love this book, and the page where that quote is from is absolutley fantastic. "All art is quite useless." Lovely drawing as well!

Thank you! I had a hard time getting over those brilliant epigrams myself. The way Wilde puts it, he paints pictures with words.
