Description ~ An Anglo-Saxon Family Portrait ~

The family of the Earldorman of Northumbria wanted to have their portrait painted by a famous illustrator - this is how it turned out!   From left to right: Aedgar (18), Aidan (5), Edmund (12), Merwyn (24), the Earldorman (50).

For those who are confused: these are my characters from my novel Sons of Disobedience, of which Aidan is the protagonist. I loved the idea of trying to mimic Anglo-Saxon art, and doing it for a portrait of my characters was hilarious And charcoalfeather , I finally put the paper you gave me to good use xD

For some examples of Anglo-Saxon art, check out the Virgin Mary and Jesus  from the Book of Kells and Woden  of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles (Peterborough).

What a cool idea!  It is funny how cute and happy everyone looks in the stylized portrait, as opposed to their actually serious expressions.

Hahah glad you like the idea Medieval art intrigues me so I had to apply it to my characters since it is, after all, a part of their conscience (the only art they actually know). Thanks for checking this out!

This looks great! I love how you handled the stylised one - I mean, the medieval stylisation is clear, yet it retains your own original flair as well. I like how colourful it is. And like charcoalfeather mentioned, I think it's great that the stylised version makes them look happier (so it is less realistic in more than one way!)

Thank you very much I thought the painter would want to depict an idealized version of reality (within the standards of the age, of course) so he'd like to add a smile to make them seem happier together It was fun doing this ^^

Haha, nice to see how you've used the paper! It's so cute how the styles contrast each other. Ironically, Merwyn and Aidan look so much happier in the stylized version than they do in the realistic one. Aedgar looks as stern as he usually does! Edmund seems to have a mischievous half smile.

I've never seen Aidan that happy before as he does in the Anglo-Saxon style picture And Merwyn too. It's really cute! I love how the colours make their outfits stand out a lot. You've really captured the characteristic style of Anglo-Saxon art well with the faces, in particular.

Thank you very much for the comment and the paper

This was really fun to make ^^ Haha indeed, they look very happy and carefree while the Earldorman and Aedgar look serious and imposing. Almost the ideal family

Almost, haha. I think the stylized version is really how others may see them, while the realistic portrait is how they actually see themselves (Merwy and Aidan aren't happy at all).
