Description ~ To the Nightsky ~

She guided herself on the brink of the precipice only by the array of the astral bodies, the shapes they formed in the dark blue sky above her. Shapes of birds soaring free, of dragons with glimmering wings, of proud warriors with magical swords lent by the gods to liberate the mortals, of maidens gathering jewelled water of life from a springing silver fountain, of woodsmen - unbound and untamed - venturing to hunt in the perils of the night forests!
______________________________________
A surreal portrait of Merwyn* and the night sky that she loves to watch.

For her, the darkness and the sea are symbols of freedom, and only in her secret runaways by the shore at night can she truly be herself. If, in her youth, she is locked in her own mind and doesn't share her thoughts with anyone (but Halvor , in a small measure), in my new story she will be seen in the company of Aidan , her 10 year old son, the only other person who gets a glimpse of her solitary character.

*Merwyn is the wife of the Earldorman of Northumbria  and the main character of my eponymous novella  taking place in 980 AD England.

AGHHHHHH YESSS another deviation about Merwyn! I love seeing more of her and reading more of her and it's really been a while since we've seen her, so this is great. I love how you're starting to use more colours in your work and how your use of blue and purple really make her seem supernatural and "free." You've nailed her desire for freedom and her dreaminess, with the stars, her pose, and the free flowing curved lines.

I just realized she kinda seems Cosmist based on the art, the stars, and the description of "mortals" and "astral bodies". Is this why you said she would think Kuzya is "her ideal man"?

I can't wait to see your new (short) story! So it's going to be about 10 year old Aidan and how he views Merwyn?

Thanks for the great comment  I'm so glad you like her character, and that you see the supernatural touch in all her strangeness and social disfunctionality. Indeed, I always show something of her inner world when I portray her, so that she doesn't seem just a lame teenager (as many people, including the Earldorman, see her ).

And yes, she doesn't give up her old habits (of dreaming away and being strange) even in her late 20s, or at least they surface from time to time - but now it's usually only Aidan who witnesses these outbursts, while to all the rest she seems a changed and more mature person. And this is just what the short story is going to show - a scene where Merwyn is being herself and Aidan is left to figure her out. Being a child, he doesn't understand her much but she does influence him a lot unconsciously, and in later years he will remember this scene as something representative for her and it will be a key factor in understanding her.

HAHA YES that's exactly why!!! So you see it too! (I actually thought about that while drawing the sky ) She and Kuzya would have a lot in common, even more so than Aidan and her. What would he think about her though?

You're very welcome!

Aidan would definitely be confused. It's going to be interesting how her dreaming nature will influence her son and how that influences his own views of himself especially after he's with the Vikings. It might actually help him, I feel, since Merwyn's dreamy quality would encourage Aidan to think beyond the black and white binary that's been imposed on him by people like his half brother and "father."

I would think that Kuzya would think she is somewhat similar, but being that she's from such a different timeline, he would wonder why she doesn't know what "space" (as he understands it) is. At the same time, it depends on what time they meet each other. When she's a teen, he might just feel she doesn't have a lot of strong beliefs and that might off-put him, interestingly enough, since he believes in having (even if they're fake) goals. I think once she's in her late twenties, he would be quite open to her and would really appreciate how she balances her grown-up side with her dreaming side.

Exactly, Aidan becomes more flexible and more inclined to search for the unknown and unseen.

That's right, the timeline does influence a lot of things. She truly is much less connected to reality than Kuzya and doesn't have many strong opinions or beliefs, especially in her teenage years, but things would be different if she lived in the 20th century and had access to information. As for goals... well, perhaps she would even fight for women's rights to education. In this way, she and Kuzma would have more opinions to share.

(It's funny that my other important female character Rannveig is a much stronger person in many respects, but I don't imagine her fighting for women's rights in the 20th century - she would only fight for herself to climb her way to leadership positions in more or less shady ways, and she would not ask for education either )

Haha, I guessed that for Rannveig, that she wouldn't care! Shady ways, I knew it! I like the contrast between Merwyn and Rannveig and I think that shows how Aidan learns more about the world too, moving from one important woman in his life to another (you did suggest that Rannveig and Aidan interact quite a bit).

Yep, the end always justifies the means for her Yes that's very true, it's a great point!! Aidan and Rannveig have very little in common, but I think he finds her intriguing and perhaps she indirectly influences him to become stronger and more self-reliant (well, it's rather the circumstances that force him to take life in his own hands, but she does play a part). So indeed, each of the two women appeal to and represent a part of his personality.

We never know who Aidan ends up with, do we? Is it Rannveig lol I wonder how his wife, if he ever gets one, will be like...

Haha it's hard to say, we don't get to know much in the novel, although we do get some hints... It has to be someone who keeps his attention alert, that's for sure, otherwise he would sink into his studies and travels and gradually distance himself from her. Rannveig certainly fits in this category but if that's enough or not, it remains to be seen (and even if he likes her, what she thinks about him is a different matter )

Heheh, keeping it a mystery and are you suggesting that Rannveig thinks he's just a weakling slave and her opinion of him doesn't really get to change?

HelevornArt In reply to charcoalfeather [2016-08-24 14:02:18 +0000 UTC]

He works hard to improve his position and the Norsemen's opinion about him, but are they even worth impressing? They all have their flaws, their "dark" side, and most of them are pretty much assholes anyway (including Rannveig). So even if she starts noticing his qualities and he becomes more than a slave to her, is that enough to start a relationship with him? And even if they both wanted to have a relationship, would they be any good together (considering all the differences between them)? This is one of Aidan's dilemmas in the novel and it influences their relationship as well.

charcoalfeather In reply to HelevornArt [2016-08-24 15:02:57 +0000 UTC]

Very good points you raise. Definitely, being a slave of the Norsemen would make Aidan not really care about impressing them at all. After all, this kind of thinking, as you've implied here, extends to not only Rannveig, but of course Yngvar and even someone relatively "friendly" like Hakon.

How many years does Aidan spend as a slave again?

HelevornArt In reply to charcoalfeather [2016-08-24 21:35:08 +0000 UTC]

True. Aidan can't be called "judgemental" but he constantly assesses people.

Long enough for him to get a taste of the hardships of life! (meaning: I never mentioned exactly how long he is a slave because of the spoiler nazi that I am )
