Thanks for the great comment I'm so glad you like her character, and that you see the supernatural touch in all her strangeness and social disfunctionality. Indeed, I always show something of her inner world when I portray her, so that she doesn't seem just a lame teenager (as many people, including the Earldorman, see her ).
And yes, she doesn't give up her old habits (of dreaming away and being strange) even in her late 20s, or at least they surface from time to time - but now it's usually only Aidan who witnesses these outbursts, while to all the rest she seems a changed and more mature person. And this is just what the short story is going to show - a scene where Merwyn is being herself and Aidan is left to figure her out. Being a child, he doesn't understand her much but she does influence him a lot unconsciously, and in later years he will remember this scene as something representative for her and it will be a key factor in understanding her.
HAHA YES that's exactly why!!! So you see it too! (I actually thought about that while drawing the sky ) She and Kuzya would have a lot in common, even more so than Aidan and her. What would he think about her though?

Heheh, keeping it a mystery and are you suggesting that Rannveig thinks he's just a weakling slave and her opinion of him doesn't really get to change?

He works hard to improve his position and the Norsemen's opinion about him, but are they even worth impressing? They all have their flaws, their "dark" side, and most of them are pretty much assholes anyway (including Rannveig). So even if she starts noticing his qualities and he becomes more than a slave to her, is that enough to start a relationship with him? And even if they both wanted to have a relationship, would they be any good together (considering all the differences between them)? This is one of Aidan's dilemmas in the novel and it influences their relationship as well.

Very good points you raise. Definitely, being a slave of the Norsemen would make Aidan not really care about impressing them at all. After all, this kind of thinking, as you've implied here, extends to not only Rannveig, but of course Yngvar and even someone relatively "friendly" like Hakon.
How many years does Aidan spend as a slave again?
