Results posted below! Some awesome entries guys, it was a joy to see them I'm getting to work on promised art prizes, please be sure to contact donor groups/individuals to claim those prizes!
Welcome back, boos and ghouls, it's time for the sequel Shriekquel? I'll stop. (No I won't.) Some of the classes are the same, some have been modified or replaced altogether (though not loads because I'm a lazy bum). Hope you'll have fun!
Rules
-Common sense, k? Be nice, don't enter a horse twice in one class, don't reuse judged entries, don't whine about results, the usual. We're here to have fun, and you're all smart people, don't make me spell it out for you (get it, spell, like witches... Hallo..Halloween... ehehe this bodes well for the rest of this journal)
-If you use references, credit them and have permission to use them. (So stock or your own photos, not just random poses pulled from google. Generic research ideas for costumes and inspiration, fine, but if you're copying off a photo, respect photographers okay?)
-Uhh that's it really, I'll add rules if they become necessary but the idea here is to have fun and be creative, so I'm not going to put major restrictions on format. You can go for spooky themes, or autumn themes, or the cute fun sassy side of Halloween, whatever floats your goat.
Classes
Halloween: The Musical
Dress up in a Halloweeny costume of your choice and perform a routine or pattern; by default this is a dressage class, however western horses may perform reining patterns, and other breeds or disciplines may perform their own equivalent, say garrocha for example. Ask if you are uncertain. Music is not absolutely 200% mandatory but it may boost your score and I'd recommend having it since it's part of the class theme. But if you just want to draw costume dressage and have no music ideas, it won't disqualify you.
Trick or Treat
A scavenger hunt through the fields and forests around Falkengård. Checkpoints consisting of stashes of candy or other little prizes will be "hidden" (not ridiculously, it's hard enough searching a forest) throughout the course. Some checkpoints will be by themselves, while others will be guarded by dressed-up Falken staff on horseback (and some may even be on the move- do you chase that ghost rider or run away to somewhere safe?) The course is appropriately decorated as well. Different sections of the course will have different levels of difficulty and spookiness, so while the youngest or most timid riders might just encounter cheery autumn scenes or a fairy princess on a pony handing out sweets, the most hardcore competitors may be in for some thrills and chills The winner is whoever finds the most checkpoints in one hour. Officially speaking. We all know the real winner is the kid who grabs the biggest handful of candy. Leaders permitted for young or inexperienced riders.
Costumes? Of course.
Hoppy Halloween
If you can survive the title pun, you might be tough enough to take on the showjumping course. Costumes permitted but not required, should probably not be too cumbersome to jump with however. Halloween-themed jumps, so unleash your inner course designer here. So spooky, you just might make me jump!
cue screaming as the host is dragged away to her
pun-ishment
Supernatural Showdown
Powerful, magical, eerie, or downright macabre, we want to see it. It's a bit unfair to the normies to have to match up against actual mythical beasts, so for all your equine witches or reality glitches who want to show off their spooky stuff, this one's for you. Costumes are permitted but not required- perhaps your magical demonstration is so cool you don't even need to dress up. You can essentially draw the horse doing whatever you want here, just keep in mind that if your idea has magical enhancements, it goes in this class and not in the others. Note: unnatural or fantasy horses may enter the other classes if they wish, but magic or powers cannot be used in any class but this one. Got it? Got it.
Judging
Based on a roughly even mix of effort and creativity. Let's be honest I'm just going to pick my favorite based on my own subjective opinion like any other judge does, but here's a run-down of what my opinion will be based on. Believe it or not, though subjective, I am quite thorough in my analysis of entries when I judge things.
Things that will boost your score: detailed work; taking the time to draw things by hand and go the extra mile in effort rather than tracing anatomy/glaringly copypasted objects/awkwardly cropped-out faces; cooking up your own ideas instead of just googling Halloween jumps; attention to artistic elements like color, light, composition; creative ideas in costumes, music matching in the case of the dressage class, and drawing execution. A good story, while not required, may contribute to my overall impression of effort and creativity.
Things that will sink your score: use of references that aren't legit stock; taking safe shortcuts while drawing instead of challenging yourself; a general lack of the elements described in the score-boosting section above.
Note- extra images will not really give extra points in judging, but you'll probably get a voucher for a free Halloween cupcake or a ride on Andy's spooky woodland carriage tour or an autograph signing with Bu the stable ghost or something. If you have ideas for spoopy or cute or fun extras around the show, or meeting the staff that is hosting it, or RPing with other entrants or whatever, I am 100% all for it and I want to see it. This show is intended to be fun, go wild!

Best Costume
F.A.Q.
Q: What about setting and handlers for the Supernatural Showdown?
A: Handlers are not required, but it's possible they can reflect well in effort score. But if they're just in the way for the horse's performance, skip them. Background and time of day are left free to your own choice, whatever suits the performance best- I don't want to limit your creativity! Keep in mind that the show is hosted at a stable in Sweden, so a tropical beach might seem a bit out of place, but it won't necessarily count against you if you can be convincing about it.
Q: And the other classes..?
A: Riders required for the other classes. Showjumping and dressage should take place in some sort of arena with even footing, you may choose indoor/outdoor/grass/dirt/decorations/setting/etc according to your tastes. Remember- Swedish landscape as a general guideline, and maybe not a setup that poses danger to the horses, but it doesn't have to be supremely realistic or accurate.
Q: Are props allowed in the Supernatural Showdown?
A: Yes, if they complement the horse's powers. A horse that can create magical lights can, for example, have special lighting fixtures in the arena, but there should probably not be a wizard rider conjuring cows at the same time since that distracts from rather than enhances the horse's power performance.
Q: Does it have to be magical horses in the Showdown, or can it be magical riders?
A: Riders can perform magic as long as it complements what the horse is doing. The horse shouldn't just be a passive mobility unit for the rider; it should be an active participant of the supernatural or magical display. However, the horse doesn't have to be magical from the start- it can use magic given to it by the rider for the duration of the class. Think of a rider as comparable to props from the previous question; the horse should be magical or supernatural in some way, but that magic may be a temporary spell created by the rider, and the rider can perform magic as well, as long as it complements the horse.
Q: Team entries?
A: Yes, you may do team entries (such as a small group trick or treating, or a dressage PDD). These will be judged as a single entry and the entire group receives the same placing. I ask that you keep the number reasonably small because otherwise I'll be super sad doing prize drawings for the rest of my life.
Q: Is tack required?
A: If your costume looks better bareback, go for it. Just be aware that in judging I won't necessarily downgrade creative choice to forego tack if it works for the idea, but I can usually see the difference between skipping tack to make a better costume design and skipping tack because you're feeling lazy
If you're unsure about something, just ask; I don't bite and even if I were to bite, I am not a vampire nor a werewolf despite how spooky and supernatural this show clearly makes me out to be, so the worst thing that could happen is that you'll need a rabies shot or something.

Sure, as long as it is finished enough to look like it belongs in the show (as opposed to like, random anatomy sketch without context). If it's the wip you posted earlier, that's totally fine ^^

I'm gonna enter like all of my horses. XD
Couple of questions tho: Are there age restrictions for riders on the classes? Is tack required for Trick or Treat or is bareback ok? And can we do multiple entries on one sheet (like a cute family outing)?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Helsinge In reply to WolfHavenWoods [2017-10-17 15:53:34 +0000 UTC]
Awesome
-Age restrictions - not really, keeping it reasonable is appreciated (like maybe a two year old isn't jumping five foot fences)
-Bareback is okay, some costumes could look cooler bareback for example so I'm not going to be picky there
-multiple entries: do you mean like, multiple images in one sheet, like different frames? That would be ok. Or do you mean like say three riders together in a scene? I'm inclined to say yes, it's just trickier to judge. I've done that before and I'm not sure how well I managed to give fair results. How I did it then was each entrant was scored on its own, but since they shared background, they kinda split those points, so ended up with different placings. Another option is to do a sort of "team entry" I suppose, and the group gets the same placing together. That's a bit easier to work with, but depends on whether you want each one as an individual entrant or nah.

Nice! It's so hard finding shows that don't require tack.
Team scoring is perfect for me! I have a couple of cool ideas for couples/group costumes and I didn't want to split them up.

For Supernatural Showdown, could my rider be the one who actually is magical and the horse normal? lmao or was this not intended for this class?
Honestly probably won't have time to enter, but just asking just in case.

Helsinge In reply to Blackwood-Sanctuary [2017-10-12 16:22:11 +0000 UTC]
...I had not actually considered this possibility. Hm. The intent was sort of loosely to be a class for fantasy horses to actually use those powers that so many shows are like "no powers allowed", buut perhaps it could be magical rider as well? Could you describe a little what you're thinking of doing?

Blackwood-Sanctuary In reply to Helsinge [2017-10-12 23:55:13 +0000 UTC]
I wanna make a SUPERNATURAL DUEL between two characters where they're chucking spells at each other lmao. So it's all magical and there are powers involved. Just not horse powers.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Helsinge In reply to Blackwood-Sanctuary [2017-10-13 08:48:12 +0000 UTC]
Hmm. I'm not entirely sure it fits the class intent, but I never directly specified against it either and that sounds pretty cool and I want to see it. I think what I'll settle on is that it's ok as long as the horses are involved in some way. If you see previous questions, props for example are ok if they complement/accentuate the horse's ability. So if the horses themselves are magicked in some way, so that they are a part of the display, it could be fine. If we compare riders to props, it sort of goes a bit outside the bounds if it's all rider magic duel and the horses are just mobility units so to speak. But if the riders are dueling in tandem/complement to the magic the horses are displaying, it would be alright I think (even if the horse magic is temporary and was created by the riders in the first place). Does that make sense?
